Hen Pen the pheasant has been a constant companion while I’ve been gardening today. I even picked her up to move her out of the greenhouse when she’d forgotten how she got inside. She was completely unbothered.
@helenclayton I don't think pheasants are terribly bright. And how can people shoot something that's as tame as this?
@Dewines because it’s easy I guess 😢
@helenclayton Indeed. But it's not very sporting. 😔
@helenclayton She’s definitely your pet now.
@helenclayton I too have had pheasant visitors to my garden - a male one, who strutted up and down looking at the fences for a full ten minutes before he remembered he could fly up to the top of them, at which point I actually cheered. 😂
Bless him, he looked like he was dressed for a black tie event and got lost.
@helenmclaughlinart the male here is much more nervous but it doesn’t stop him strutting his stuff and pursuing Hen around. They’re not very blessed in the brains department.
@helenclayton I want a pet pheasant! Long time go rented a small house while attending university, and a big rooster pheasant would occasionally fly into the yard. Until one time my pure white cat Fast Eddie went after it, never came back.
@GPJohnston she’s lovely. Feral cats come through so I hope she stays safe.
@helenclayton How strange - the pheasants that visit our garden are very nervous. There is a big shooting establishment not too far away so maybe they are right to be.
@CloudsGoBy it’s really strange. My gardening chap was really surprised that she watched him working too. It’s very endearing. There’s a big shoot near here but maybe she sees us as a sanctuary.
@helenclayton Aww. Have you got some oats or barley for her?
@BashStKid mealworms! But you’ve just reminded me that we’re out of porridge oats 😁
@helenclayton
There was a period when a pheasant hen would come wandering past our kitchen window almost every day at about 11 o'clock. She was beautiful, and unafraid of the rabbit and the magpies that used to hang around the same spot. ❤️
@mrundkvist the hens are very pretty. I’ve never had one get so close before. Or at least not intentionally and then they would startle. She’s really inquisitive. I love our wildlife friends.

@helenclayton
I love watching the fallow doe that also spends a lot of time in the quiet corner outside our kitchen window. But she and her accomplices eat the shoots off my rose bushes, which makes me want to buy a surplus artillery cannon and teach them never ever to do that again.

#gardening

@mrundkvist ah yes. The cute bunny ate my sunflowers last year.
@helenclayton is she on her own or does she have a room mate?
@ottaross there is a cock pheasant in pursuit though he’s wary of us.
@helenclayton ah well. Nice for her to have some one of her own people to chat with about pheasant issues.
@ottaross that’s true, though she seems to prefer our company 😂. She actually seeks us out which seems quite bizarre.

@helenclayton

She wandered into your greenhouse?

So that's what they mean by "pheasant under glass".

@number6 yes, and not for the first time. She had a nice dust bath in there last time.

😊

@helenclayton

hoping you dig up some worms?

@_maleficentgirl she’s had plenty of worms. And oats! She makes a lovely sound when she’s happy.
@helenclayton nice! This handsome chap came to say hello while we were having a picnic today.

@helenclayton
i keep thinking those are your feet and panicking slightly 😂

(also, she really is just wonderful 🥹)

@moonrabbit lol I can promise you they’re not my feet.

She is lovely. I was thinking today that if you want the gentle companionship of a chicken without all the stuff that goes with keeping chickens, taming a pheasant is the way to go. She seeks us out in the garden. It’s quite strange but very nice.

@moonrabbit I posted a video of her dust bathing in the greenhouse the other day. She does like it in there, though I’m going to have to keep her out once things start growing. She had a lovely time again today (surrounded by my rubbish).

@helenclayton @moonrabbit

You realise when you chuck her out of the greenhouse, you're going to end up building her her own little greenhouse to bask in?

@helenclayton
oh bless her. maybe she'd help keep bugs and things away, once there are plants?

how are you / how's your monday?

@moonrabbit I think she’ll eat the bugs well enough…but also young plants! I’m weaving a little fence around a veg patch to discourage but she hopped over that to inspect my work 🙄.

I’ve been working today bc of meetings but will swap with a day later in the week when rumours are that it’ll be sunny ☀️

How’s your Monday?

@helenclayton
oh bless. she's curious! inspecting her new veg patch

ooh, sunny! it's meant to get hot here tomorrow i think (well 20-odd), which might be nice. but weird ...

my monday has been very challenging, but it's mostly done now, thankfully. i had to glaze but was too unwell really and spent like 45mins doing one piece.🙄 managed to speed up with the rest at least. how well i did might be another matter though 😬😂

have you finished your benches?

@moonrabbit allegedly 18°c and sunny on Wednesday. But I think it turns cold again next week. It’s all so higgledy piggledy.

Ugh I’m sorry. And you don’t like glazing at the best of times. I hope your trolley still helping?

My benches are finished. Well, I need some planks for shelves underneath (had hoped to use some we already had but too short/not enough). I’m improvising for now.

@helenclayton
*everything* is higgledy piggledy

but yes trolley is amazing. so amazing! makes everything so very much easier. including tidying up!

how's your tuesday proceeding? is it sunny? we've got the sheets out ...

@moonrabbit *everything* is higgledy piggledy. Sorry I didn’t get back to you yesterday. I had a good day (finally saw an osteopath about my bad back after ignoring it for over a year! Apparently there’s hope for me) but brung down later. Nearly didn’t go out today but I’m glad I did.

Where are you off too?

@helenclayton
hooray for hope! and help for your back; i hope they can help and you feel better soon

(but yeah v easy to get brung low atm. i've been just about keeping my head up. just about.)

did you have an out in the sunshine today? (so WIMBDY here)

we had to go to the vauxhall garage to get the recall thing fixed (which they said was actually quite urgent, unlike what local guy said 😬), and they also noticed the CT failure and looked into that and it turns out local guy was 100% wrong about that too.🙄 it needs a part ... we have to go back in a few weeks for that, but at least the dangerous thing is fixed now. we had hope to do some nice things while out but didn't have time in the end, but maybe next time? or just another day.

are you eveninging?

@moonrabbit my back needs re educating apparently.

It’s been lovely today. Not wimdy at all so I had a good walk on the coast.

I’m glad that your car is fixed, mostly, and not dangerous. Sorry you didn’t get to look at things this time but it sounds like a very worthwhile trip.

@helenclayton
maybe your back can teach the rest of us, once it's learned?

and ah, the lovely coast, i'm glad you got there
