My guess is that the government does in fact know and understand how dangerous the situation is. But "in for a penny, in for a pound", they think the best way to manage the risks to the UK is to deepen the UK's attachment to the USA.

@jim The "special relationship" with America has through successive governments become more and more about selling off as much of UK as possible to American corporations. Same thing in Whitehall, same thing in NHS, same thing in defense, same thing right across policy making, same thing right across the entire British economy which is now owned almost entirely by our American corporate overlords.
