Saturday mobile Linux-ing in the sun.

@neil Ah yes. I remember those days. Back when I could log in to a terminal on a Psion 3 and work. Back when my eyes still worked with the font size 🤣
@neil What magic does your optician perform, I'm getting a headache just looking at the setup!
@larsmb @neil Easily remedied with a fresnel lens!
@neil I have a Planck I sometimes use with my phone but this looks much nicer, the Planck is still quite a chunky thing to carry around
@neil what make and model is the keyboard? Looks ideal for a small tablet as well
@glaringanomaly @neil Seconding the keyboard question. But also I need to find an e-ink screen of exactly the same dimensions as the keyboard 🕵🏼‍♂️
@neil Do you use steam punk like goggles with exciting levels of magnification so you can lean back and still see those tiny fonts on that screen at a distance? ... please tell me you do...
@neil solar panel for charging is missing! wonderful setup anyway
@neil More like, Saturday mobile casually flexing lack of astigmatism.
@neil I envy people with good sight :)
@neil I have been using a fold 7 with a Bluetooth track point lenovo keyboard. Lovely setup
@neil And people made fun of me ~20 years ago with my OLPC XO 7-inch screen and tiny keyboard.. 🫡
@neil totally thought this was going to be a hamradio pota pic. Not disappointed tho.
@neil On and off i have been looking for a decent keyboard that i can hook up to my phone.
Looks good 😊😊

Unfortunately, the company that made it (ThinkOutside) went out of business many years ago.

They were great devices. I bought one to use with my Nokia 770 (which I got at a massive discount for their open-source developer programme, yay 2006 Nokia!). It was a great pair of devices. Each fitted nicely in a jacket pocket and I could run vim in a full-screen xterm.

My routine for a while when I was writing articles was to stroll down to the café attached to the Swansea City Library, then order a big cup of tea and write on the little keyboard while looking out at the sea. The little screen didn't bother me because I generally didn't need to see more than the sentence I was working on while writing. I also wrote a few book chapters on the same setup. For a while, I went to a café that a friend opened by the marina instead, but unfortunately it went out of business.

Cambridge is a bit lacking in similar spaces. There are a few pubs that overlook the river, but they aren't great places to write.

If you have a recent android phone, any USB keyboard will work. It's just a matter of plugging it in - so you might need an adaptor. My keyboard has a USB-C socket on the back so I just use a C-to-C cable with my phone.

@neil why not landscape mode?
@neil I’ve always loved the idea in principle. But also always find myself squinting and struggling to see anything whenever I work in the sunshine …
@neil For me, trying to read anything significant on a mobile phone screen is like trying to read the Bible through a keyhole.

@neil

`tmux` makes everything better.

<3

@neil What is this? Text for ants? How can we be expected to teach children to learn how to hack... #zoolander
@neil woah! i've been searching for this exact keyboard for ages now! where'd you get it?

@neil

@neil oooo, nice keyboard
@neil holy moly. I have that keyboard which I bought about 25 years ago!
Love it
@neil
Yeeees! The mobile of the (near) future!
@neil
("near" because POSIX must die)
@neil Fabulous. I wrote weblog posts from the Caribbean with a similar setup a lifetime ago.
