This is so spot on it makes me choke. PS: Matt is a makeup #influencer . He happens to be #Jewish and #antizionist.

As used, grammatically, "dead" is a past-tense adjective while "killed" is a present tense verb, so technically, the words are used correctly.

Confusing to be sure, but how rare is it for modern media to get their grammar right nowadays? 😉

@MugsysRapSheet @sheislaurence The grammar could have easily been "400 lebanese and 2 Israel soliders killed" or "400 lebanese and 2 Israel soliders dead." Both are simplier grammically and more accurate, as all the deaths had already happened, and should be presented in the same tense.

It would also point out who was mostly killed, which this headline leaves ambigious with "400 dead in lebanon" instead of listing who died, except for the 2 "important" Israel soliders.

The fact that they mixed passive and active was an intentional choice to minimize some deaths and highlight others.

@liquidlamp @MugsysRapSheet @sheislaurence The original headline before they updated it was even worse, "Two Israeli soldiers killed as latest attacks in Lebanon leave nearly 400 dead"

You can still see it in the URL of the article: https://news.sky.com/story/two-israeli-soldiers-killed-as-latest-attacks-in-lebanon-leave-nearly-400-dead-13516918

Two Israeli soldiers killed as latest attacks in Lebanon leave nearly 400 dead

Israel has been carrying out a military operation in southern Lebanon for more than a week, with three airstrikes hitting Sir El Gharbiyeh village on Sunday.

@liquidlamp @sheislaurence
No, I dispute the mixing of tenses had any purpose.

If the 400 Lenbanese had all died in a single attack, they would of said "killed". But since it took place over several days, the proper tense is "(nearly) dead".

I agree it could have been phrased differently, but I think you're looking for a bias that just isn't there.

@MugsysRapSheet @sheislaurence I disagree, and I think Sky news does as well as they have revised the headline to now read:

"Nearly 400 killed in Lebanon conflict as first Israel casulties announced"

The above address nearly all the issues that people have raised. Same tense, shows who has died, still tells you that total now includes israel soliders.

Calling an attack/war a "conflict" is still cowardly, but otherwise an improvement across the board.

@MugsysRapSheet @sheislaurence It’s not whether the words are used correctly according to some grammar rules, but what they mean on the semantic and pragmatic level. ”Dead” is an adjective (as you point out), it’s a state, implying something that just is. ”Killed” is an action in the past tense (don’t know where you got present tense from), implying responsibility.

@MugsysRapSheet @sheislaurence

Listen. Grammar wasn't the issue and still isn't. Stop being a fascist apologist.

@drdrowland @MugsysRapSheet @sheislaurence what's the issue? Not enough dead Jews to your liking?

@sheislaurence With apologies for being a reply-guy, I'd say Matt is probably also an LGBTQ+ activist (with emphasis on trans-inclusive) these days, as well as makeup influencer. He describes his podcast (https://www.instagram.com/abitfruitypod/) as “politics, the internet, and being better to each other”

But yeah, I absolutely agree, the pretence at neutral balance from our journalists really is gone, isn't it? 😖

@owenblacker 💯%, that's his main gig and claim to fame nowadays and he is brilliant at it. Reminds me of Virgin X in the UK, are they a performance artist or an activist? I generally don't like describing people as activists unless that's how they self-define. To be accurate, Matt's self-description is "friendly queer Jew with very long nails". Nailed it (no pun intended).
@sheislaurence Ah, fair. Though I've never understood reluctance to use the word "activist". Do some people consider it to be a negative term, rather than neutral?
@owenblacker 💯%! Defo used by the MAGA crowd the same they say "woke" or "DEI". Come to think of it and being in the presence of many, i don't think i know anyone self describing as an activist or describe their peers as activists. Except... me it transpires in my bio here 😱😅! I haven't touched it in years, time for a change!! Thnx for the unwitting nudge 🤭!
@sheislaurence Huh, I've never encountered that over on this side of The Pond. How curious

@sheislaurence I decided Sky News was a piece of warmongering, propaganda, jingoistic, imperialist, bullshit when forced to watch it on huge screens in my staff canteen back in the year 2000. Back then the target was Iraq.

How would I describe what remains of the left?

* Smug lemmings
* tools of the establishment pretending to be revolutionaries
* racists calling everybody racist
* spineless parrots
* zealots of ideologies they have no clue about

There will be progress, but first, we need to destroy that fake left political complex.

@sheislaurence If he wants to influence *me*, he'll have to learn what 'active' and 'passive' mean - as well as the difference between a verb and an adjective. What the hell schools did he go to?
Passive voice - Wikipedia

@literally I learned what active and passive voice are before you were born, and 'dead' can never be in the passive voice *because it is not a verb*.
@kentenmakto did you even read the article? its more to do with subject and object interaction. and i’m in my 40s, so if you really did learn about it in the 70s maybe you should brush up ✌️

@sheislaurence

"latest attacks leave 400 dead animals as two humans were killed."

yw.

@sheislaurence Stinks of the usual bias
