New FOSS funding model just dropped
@volt4ire This isn't new; remember when XChat did it in like 2001? Linux version was free, Windows builds were paid
@volt4ire Third party builds of XChat were distributed instead, pissing off the author and ruining the entire business model
@feld
That's annoying but I wouldn't say it dispositively ruins the business model, given eg Krita (and I'm sure multiple other FOSS projects) make thousands of dollars a year from paid Windows and macOS Store releases (especially given they still have gratis regular .exe and .app releases)
@volt4ire @feld I've been considering this approach for @pidgin. App stores are paid, but we'd still provide official binaries.
@feld @volt4ire At least with Apps Store it could somewhat make sense, or like distributing it on itch.io with "name your own price", although those are one-time-only.

(And foss or not we all know there's going to be third-party distribution :P)
@volt4ire i’ve seen “paid on google play, free on fdroid” too :)
@tryst @volt4ire OsmAnd for example, OsmAnd+ costs money on Google Play, OsmAnd~ is the F-Droid version :)
@tryst @volt4ire Indeed, and FOSS games are often available from Steam for a price. I do like this funding model but it is slightly vulnerable to opportunistic third parties undercutting the effort.
@volt4ire because of the #slopocalypse it looks like a good way
@volt4ire I would definitely gatekeep macOS builds, especially if they had to be notarized
@WerySkok @volt4ire I mean you could just not publish them on the Mac Store..... Nobody's holding a gun to your head and forcing you to publish there
@snow @WerySkok @volt4ire i thought then your users arent able to just install without doing the signing themselves (or was that for ios not macos?)
@4censord @WerySkok @volt4ire If I remember correctly you can just install apps on Mac OS like you do on Windows please do correct me if I'm wrong.
@snow @4censord @WerySkok @volt4ire Last I checked you can, but only after Apple is done giving you a lecture of the unspeakable horros this app is about to do.
@snow @4censord @WerySkok @volt4ire you can, but now there is a "gatekeeper", that you can disable, that prevents them to run if not notarized. In future releases, apps not notarized (i.e. signed with developer keys - €€€) will not be installable.
@4censord @snow @WerySkok @volt4ire On macos you can install anything, but you will get one "this was downloaded from the internet, are you sure" dialog when running it

@metaphase @4censord @snow @WerySkok @volt4ire All of this needs a Apple Developer Account so they can sign the builds. macOS doesn’t allow unsigned builds to run IIRC (and if they allow them you need to go through hoops to allow it as a user). And this has a cost. This is *not* the same as “putting it on the App Store”.

If the project doesn’t have a sponsor to cover these expenses, it needs to be funded somehow (and it’s just not right to have the developer to cover it from their own pocket).

I remember an indie game developer being asked about Mac versions and saying that they weren't gonna happen because of precisely this reason.

@manum @metaphase @4censord @snow @WerySkok @volt4ire
You can do that, but the user has to:
- enable external apps (may be default actually?)
- Open Downloads in Finder
- Right-click the app
- Open
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Allow (requires Admin privileges)
- Go back to Downloads
- Right-click app
- Open
- Open anyway.

(or run `xattr remove com.apple.quarantine` to skip steps 2-5)

@volt4ire I've seen "pay for binaries" before, especially for mobile apps. Sometimes the compromise is: binaries available on F-Droid.
@Joris @volt4ire synergy does this for example :)

@volt4ire @Gina should’ve been OnlyFans
@volt4ire honestly, strongly agree with this funding model  given how much of a colossal PITA it is to make Windows builds... let alone Mac
@volt4ire I kinda like it 🤣
@volt4ire @maya aseprite already does something similar
@pollyglot @volt4ire do they do linux binaries without purchasing? I think the AUR package mentions the need to recompile it
@maya @volt4ire no so it's not quite the same
@volt4ire Ha, I use Strawberry (it's a very nice music player) and I'm very happy to support the maintainer on Patreon which gets me the macOS builds I can use on my work laptop and hopefully encourages them to keep supporting it.

as a newly-minted (pun intended) Linux user now I get to say I approve this message

tbh though it's not that new: X-Chat did it way back in the day. that's why Hexchat exists

#foss-#money
Lmao I kinda like this model

@volt4ire

Honestly fair. They're not paying for the code, they're paying for the convenience of not needing to compile it themselves.

And compiling for those platforms is quite a challenge even for experienced wizards.

Porting it in the first place is even harder. I see it fully justified to charge money for that.
