You know what's really cool? Sociable eels in small streams on a university campus in New Zealand.
@sundogplanets glad they aren’t the fabled killer eels I saw on a signpost in Matakana, New Zealand yesterday
@sundogplanets With the lack of scale reference I am forced to assume this is a huge river monster, the likes of which I was genuinely kind-of afraid of every time I was near a stream as a kid πŸ˜‚ I think there was a children's show or something about a boy catching an enormous, monstrous eel πŸ€”

@jwcph @sundogplanets ah yes, the New Zealand Longfin Eel river monster.

"Before long he is being swarmed by roughly a hundred of these 'devourers of men'."

New Zealand Longfin Eel

The New Zealand Longfin Eel is the largest species of freshwater eel. The Longfin Eel is featured in River Monsters Season 3. Jeremy Wade travels to New Zealand in search of the legendary Devourer of Men. He ends up narrowing his search to the New Zealand Longfin Eel. He eventually turns himself into human bait by rubbing rotting fish on a suit he put on. He then gets into the water in the hopes of attracting eels. However, he didn't bargain on getting very many. Before long he is being...

@pelicangut @sundogplanets 😱😱😱
@jwcph @sundogplanets I mean, he did rub fish all over himself to bring the eels to him…
@jwcph @sundogplanets Biggest eel I encountered was in 1976 and circa. 5 feet long. I was 15. We caught it after it bit me on the calf crossing a stagnant section of river in Kerikeri, NZ. We took a photo of it with its head cut off and held level with my eyes and its tail an inch or so off the ground. Still have the scar. πŸ˜–
@sundogplanets that's an ell of an eel
@sundogplanets a bit bigger than I initially expected reading 'eel'

@sundogplanets

Eels are bigger than I thought!

@sundogplanets I remember seeing Jeremy Wade's episode of River Monsters on them. NZ eels are pretty special, especially for Māori
@sundogplanets Eels are awesome! And yes, can be quite sociable
@sundogplanets
But did it shriek?
@sundogplanets There used to be a place near Nelson on the South Island that would give you a little cup of raw chicken bits and a popsicle stick to feed them with. It was terrifying and cool at the same time. They would come up out of the water to get some, and could bite down on the stick and pull it out of your hand.

@sundogplanets I am reminded of the famous poem by Ogden Nash:

The Eel

I don’t mind eels
Except as meals.
And the way they feels.

@sundogplanets that's even cooler than koi
@sundogplanets Is that a moray? It looks like a moray.

@grumpydad @sundogplanets

i am this close to ask you if the moon hit your eye 😒

@sundogplanets
When the eel is not shy
And she comes to say hi
That's a moray
@fullfathomfive Not a moray, it's a longfin eel (tuna in Maori) but WOW I love this song thank you.
@fullfathomfive @sundogplanets
When you're down on the reef
And you feel pointy teef
That's a moray...

@gabe @fullfathomfive @sundogplanets Do you all know the version sung by the NPR science reporters a few years back? Classic. (Towards the end of this 3-minute clip.)

@bluejay @fullfathomfive @sundogplanets I did not know that one, thank you!

@fullfathomfive @sundogplanets when the jaws open wide
and there's more jaws inside
that's a moray

(Not taking credit, but I saw it once and it stuck)

@sundogplanets Oh no, it will tell you aweful jokes.
