We're researching electric #cargoBikes for nursery and grocery trips. Can you help?

The bike should:
• manage semi-hilly area near #Sheffield.
• be good for novice riders, ideally with easy adjustments between riders.
• be compatible with a toddler and a medium-sized grocery shop.
• store small or outside well (no garage).
• be compatible with UK purchasing, weather, and infrastructure.

We're currently considering the Tern HSD P5i, but very happy to hear any recommendations or advice. 🧑‍🧑‍🧒🚲🔌

@chicgeek I’m a bigger fan of front bucket style bikes, like the Bullit. They’re a lot more practical for moving shopping around in, panniers struggle with bulkier items (packs of loo roll, etc) They’re a lot harder to store, and manoeuvre when not riding however.
Friends have just bought a Tern with similar requirements and seem to like it.

Mine is front loading, with a pannier rack for other things if I’m moving the dog as well.

@tom @chicgeek i second the front bucket style. We got the Riese & Müller Load4 75 this summer and love it. Use it daily to take our 6 and 3 year old to school snd kindergarten. About 15 km round trip 2 times a day. My partner is (was) a less experienced rider and was a little hesitant but she adapted to it in days. She absolutely loves it. We’re in Aarhus, Denmark so hills and weather should be somewhat similar to yours.

@turegjorup @tom Thanks both.

We definitely don't have space to store this, however. Unless you can recommend something we can install outdoors?

@chicgeek @tom we don’t have indoor space either. Ours sits in a locked courtyard with a cover on at night. Not this brand but something similar https://www.cykelgarage.dk/products/bikeparka-cargo-cykelcover-sort.

@chicgeek we’ve got a Riese & Müller Multitonker since September 2025 (3000 miles already!) and are very happy with it.

We’re in Bristol (not very flat!), with a 6yo and 5yo, to give you an idea of its usage.

It’s not our first e-Bike either (we had a Radpower Radwagon 4, and an O2 feel before). I’d say it’s the best we had so far

@loicfaugeron Amazing, this is very helpful!

cc @caolan

@loicfaugeron Out of curiosity, how tall are you both?
@chicgeek true, forgot to consider you height difference requirement. We only have a 10cm height difference, so no changes are needed when we switch

@loicfaugeron We're not too different in height, though we're not tall. I saw one review that mentioned it was better for taller people, so I'm wondering how you fared.

Thank you kindly for answering a stranger's questions, by the way. I appreciate it!

@chicgeek ha! Yeah, I'm 1m80.

The frame is low, the seat can be adjusted without tools, and (to be checked!) so is the handle.

This website bellow says it fits between 1m50 and 2m00 people, but I'd expect it's more comfortable if your height is in the middle than near the end pf that range

The Multitinker. Compact but with so many options. The Multitinker is the ideal car replacement in the city: transport two children, a large weekly shop or good

@chicgeek if you can afford the Tern, it's an absolutely amazing bike that can deal with all that and still be just a bike that gets you alone somewhere, unlike a box bike that's a bit unwieldy. I think it can also be stored vertically so can fit even in the hallway. Get a bunch of bungee cords and it'll carry anything!
@dain All the bungee cords!

@chicgeek I’ve not tried any of them, but if I was in the market, the rear-loading Tern would be top of my list to try.

GCN have lots of videos reviewing them. The rear-loading ones look more nimble and easier to ride.

@chicgeek Also, the rear-loading Terns have a neat party trick in that you can stand them on their ends, saving a bit of space.

Definitely go and try one if you can, and check this will work with a child seating.

@katiefenn Yes! We tried out an HSD P5i in Heeley on the weekend. Thank you, friend.

@chicgeek Thanks to everyone for posting. This is such a useful thread. Tagging for an early #SolarPunkSunday 🌱
