Mastodon includes an optional feature which lets you automatically delete your posts after a certain amount of time. There's a guide to using this feature including lots of questions answered at:

It's off by default, it only deletes stuff if you switch it on. You can also set it to keep certain posts, more info in the guide.

I've tried to answer questions about this feature in the guide, but let me know if I've missed anything.

@FediTips I wish it was applied automatically to posts in the #SEO hashtag 🤭

Is the inverse of this possible:
"What if I want to keep some old posts and autodelete the rest?"

ie Is it possible to tag individual posts for auto-deletion after a certain time, and keep the rest?

This would let people quarantine some hot-takes from coming back to bite them if (for example) their employer ever discovered the Fediverse. But, of course, it could embolden some people to be more antisocial.

@mlazz You should be able to change the settings to make it so if you bookmark or other variables stop it from deleting. It would be good to look into the settings and see what might be good.

If you don't use bookmarks normally, bookmarking the ones you want to keep could be a good system.

I'd appreciate this option too - eg for quick responses of no lasting value.

As far as I know this isn't possible. The auto-deletion is based on choosing exceptions to the deletion rather than choosing specific posts to be deleted.

A workaround could be to reply to the posts you want to delete with reminderbot, then manually deleting them when you get the reminder. More info https://fedi.tips/is-there-a-reminder-bot-for-mastodon-and-the-fediverse

I wouldn't rely on deletion to remove public stuff though, if it's a public post it may get archived somewhere. Setting it to followers-only is safer.

Good one. I will surely want to make use of it.
