Why does Ubuntu attract so many haters? Snaps might be a reason, but there's more to it. 😅

Ubuntu Isn’t Perfect… But the Hate It Gets Is Over the Top

Ubuntu may not be perfect, but the amount of hate it receives from Linux users is often exaggerated. Here's why the criticism deserves a rethink.

It's FOSS
@itsfoss I Kind of like Ubuntu... Is there hate? I am quite new to this.
@lucasth @itsfoss lots of hate, especially on reddit.
@khanh @itsfoss ok I will just ignore that...

@itsfoss True. I don't like it, but that just results in me not using it. And that's fine, isn't it?

(Though the way things are going recently with *all* distros, LFS is looking viable again.)

@itsfoss

I've used many distros over the decades and was quite happy to have Ubuntu be a major one for a long time. But the Snaps are annoying.

@Kalon @itsfoss what is annoying about 'the Snaps'?

@LanceJZ
Mostly I'm just used to the old way of doing things with .deb files.

Beyond that I guess I've come to accept Flatpak since it seems to have become the more common cross distro packaging system.

@itsfoss

@Kalon @itsfoss I use Flatpak too, it depends on what is best supported by the dev, like the article talks about.
@itsfoss as much as I hate snaps, Ubuntu remains the best distro for my personal requirements
@itsfoss What I always miss when Ubuntu is mentioned as our "savior" is that they would be nowhere without Debian. It's just Debian with some extras.
Many distros used to start with Ubuntu and go from there, but more and more go back to Debian as a starting point. Mint LMDE is a least as good, maybe even better than the standard Ubuntu based edition.
So people, use Debian or a Debian based distro. We don't need Ubuntu, it's just another distro.
@itsfoss You can use snaps, flatpaks and deb-packages side by side, and you can allways decide by yourself which one to use, so what's all the fuss anyway? Ubuntu just works.
@itsfoss I've been using Slackware and spinoffs for years - currently Porteus - and I accept that this is Linux so everyone is entitled to their own opinion of 'what works'. We may not agree because we have differing priorities, and needs from our software 'ecosystem' but STOP WITH THE UBUNTU BUTTHURT willya? ' The hate it gets is over the top'? Grow up! Stop crying! Grow some more distros!

@itsfoss many reasons to hate Ubuntu, hope the list fits in a tooth:

Centralized proprietary Snap ecosystem forced on users

replaced gnu utils with Rust

Amazon ads, sent search queries to Amazon (2012ish)

their license gives extra rights over contributions

Building Unity vs collaborating with GNOME

Creating Mir instead of using Wayland

Forcing Snap versions of apps like Firefox

Killing projects like Ubuntu Touch and Unity after pushing them heavily

Telemetry added in Ubuntu 18.04

@itsfoss I love Ubuntu. What is wrong with Snap?

@itsfoss

I don't hate Ubuntu but the last LTS came with some issues that were very frustrating for me and which would have vexxed someone with less experience. Three that spring to mind:

-NTFS driver that doesn't work (why can I suddenly not access my NTFS drives!?)

-appimages restricted (why can I not open these programs that I rely on!?)

-GTK version not being backwards compatible (why do the GUIs of these plugins I rely on suddenly not work!?)

@itsfoss
I learned a lot with Ubuntu desktop many years ago, but at one point, I felt like I was fighting more with it than I was actually using it. Snap made it even worst... For the desktop, I left for Pop!Os for many years, but now that they are not updating the Gnome version anymore, I switched to Debian. I still use Ubuntu-server a lot though...
@Normand_Nadon Oh, I get it. If a desktop gets in your way, then it is doing something wrong.
@itsfoss for me, it was like someone had rearranged a room in a way that didn't make sense to me.
@el_haych2024 An interesting take, thanks for sharing!
@itsfoss my first distro was kubuntu (ubuntu shipping with kde) and its probably the worst distro ive used so far and ive used a lot, its not that its doing anything wrong (even tho it does with snap and probably other things) its that i dont see much reason to use it over something like fedora or just base debian
