it is difficult to overstate what a comprehensive dunderhead Why from Bluesky, vibecoding wunderkind, formerly of various cryptocurrency projects and current neoreactionary VibeCamp habitue, truly is
in b4 some nerd links https://support.apple.com/en-us/108039 without mentioning the bit that explicitly says DO NOT DO THIS YOU IDIOT
@davidgerard “uhm but David here’s 2 (two) videos of me dunking my phone into a small bowl of drinking water, no I won’t engage with you about how the point is that it killed the phone”
@davidgerard I really take issue with Apple messaging on this, which is « hey, it’s probably fine whatever, but if that breaks that’s on you » as it touts a IP68 resistance which signals that it’s ok as long as you don’t leave it underwater too long

@Luk @davidgerard

Isn't that just the message to users for everything now with AI? 😛

@davidgerard

taps sign

"just because you know one thing does not mean you know all things"

@coolcalmcollected @davidgerard
I would argue at this point that 'knowing one thing' is debatable.

@mtconleyuk @davidgerard

pretty sure Why is getting by on people networking

a.k.a. bullshit ass kissing

@davidgerard The page also says "maximum depth of 6 meters up to 30 minutes" and I have to wonder how this is in any way compatible with "do not intentionally submerge your phone in water".

@elronxenu i'd like to see what happens when you claim it under warranty

(but not to any phone of mine)

@davidgerard Just tell them it fell into the water and then claim it should have been ok due to IP68.
@elronxenu @davidgerard This is basically the rating right after sale. Sealing will degrade over time and with stress. Heat-cycle it (charging) for a few months, drop it a couple of times, and, well, it's *probably* still fine, but no guarantees anymore. Applying extreme heat, like you would do when disassembling the glued parts, certainly will not help either.
@henryk @elronxenu @davidgerard leaving it in the sun for a couple hour will also put significant stress on it
@elronxenu @davidgerard Seems to depend on the model (which we don't know) but also "Splash, water, and dust resistance are not permanent conditions and resistance might decrease as a result of normal wear", so I think they are saying it might survive but please don't try it...
@davidgerard who cares if it's waterproof, just what kind of thought process is this
@spinnyspinlock @davidgerard one of all first thoughts, no second thoughts

@davidgerard impossible to overstate. There are people who couldn't pour water out of a boot with instructions on the heel.

This guy is still trying to understand what water is, forget a boot, and might make some progress if he finally manages to develop object permanence.

@rootwyrm he is pretty sure object permanence is wokeism from shitlibs
@davidgerard goddamnit David, not when I'm drinking coffee. Coffee is valuable!

@davidgerard they are so deeply unintelligent, as are the people that hired and funded them, that simply being in proximity will cause severe brain damage to normal people.

I mean, these people are so utterly devoid of anything resembling sapience that they would give Elon Musk a run for his money in that department.

@davidgerard

When I was 10 or so I was obsessed with pokemon. I dropped my Gameboy in the toilet when I was playing while peeing and then washed it off in the sink and tried to dry it on a candle.

Needless to say I completely ruined my Gameboy and felt like an idiot for years.

Seeing a full blown adult make basically the same mistake but in the other direction makes 10 year old me feel a lot better.

@gbargoud @davidgerard "tried to dry it with a candle" is exactly the kind of shit that 10 year old me would have tried too 😂

@davidgerard I tried stuffing some meat into the charging port of my phone, but it still ran out of battery.

I eat burgers when I need energy, why can't my phone?

@tarmil @davidgerard It can, but then you have to take it to the toilet several times a day, otherwise it breaks.
@davidgerard water cooled PCs have been a thing for years. Is dunking your phone in the pool really so different?
@jamesh did you get as far as the post after this
@jamesh @davidgerard More like water cooled PCs have been leaking and needing to be replaced for years
@davidgerard I'm immediately incensed given I expect he makes at least 6x what I do.

@davidgerard

When I stumbled across your post just now I thought it was a joke at first.
But apparently it's not? This guy and his posts are real???

@QuinnAlexis i am sorry to say

look up "Jeromy Johnson" in tech haunts for more unfettered brillance

@davidgerard surely they aren't serious

@davidgerard

"I washed my parrot in Tide, and it died!”

"I told you Tide wasn't good for parrots.”

"Oh, it wasn’t the Tide that killed it, it was the spin-cycle.”

Same energy.

@angusm @davidgerard "it wasn't the airplane, it was beauty killed the beast."

@davidgerard

'Peasants, behold! My genius even more genius-y thanks to AI! I can genius even faster now! Also, uh oh spaghetti-o's, I dropped my phone in the pool on purpose again because I know better than the people who made it!'

@davidgerard water good human so why water not good phone?! Glue good paper so why not glue good pizza?? Stochastic token association good computer so why not good me? :(

@davidgerard why do i get the feeling "dip it in a pool" means just chucking it in

i've personally not had issues from gently washing my phone under the tap

@Ember we should be clear that whatever story he's telling here, this is the presentable version
@davidgerard Truly extinction-grade stupid.
@customdeluxe i fear these guys will never die out
@davidgerard i'm starting to think the real techbro agenda is to somehow prevent natural selection.
@customdeluxe eugenicists are all like that, it keeps resulting in them not being at the top (or alive)

@davidgerard

And now that this is online and if it goes viral AI is going to retrieve it see it used often and quote it back to somebody as a go to solution.

@davidgerard my iPhone overheated so I yeeted it into low earth orbit ‘cause Elon Musk told me it’s a great place for efficient heat dissipation. It might have worked but I can’t see the screen from here.
@davidgerard
This reads even more like a Dankpods mic test than Advait Paliwal's screed about horses.
@davidgerard It's the same mix of arrogance and ignorance that techbros chose to put into their AI.
@davidgerard Sounds like the sort of person whose hubris has only caused temporary shame because their wealth insulated them from their ignorance.
@davidgerard They just be letting anybody have kids, don't they.
@davidgerard Isn't "water + electronics = BAD" one of the first safety rules you learn as a kid. Why are there people defending this
@davidgerard this shit really does turn you into a bumbling fool
@davidgerard "nah these things are waterproof"

against fucking
rain, the little water droplets that fall on the screen, not dipping the phone in a body of water and letting it flow inside ports
@witix @davidgerard to be fair many modern phones are IP68 or thereabouts and are thus rated to survive full submersion in water
@davidgerard @witix based on them saying they need an apple store im going to guess that their phone is one of those
