I'm taking the day off work because I feel terrible with flu. I'm going to watch TV all day. What should I watch? Stargate SG1 is kn Netflix now so that's an option. I think I can buy or rent battlestar Galactica or Babylon 5....
I've actually decided I want to watch action movies. So I'm starting with the Running Man remake.
I am taking recommendations for big silly switch-off-brain action movies. What have you got for me?
@Scmbradley last action hero with Arnold
@sidewayshighways this is a good shout. Love a bit of high camp arnie
@Scmbradley while I was having a full-on existential crisis years ago, I saw Shoot 'Em Up in the cinema and didn't once contemplate The Void for the duration.
Can confirm it switches your brain fully off.
@christianp is that the film where Clive owen shoots everyone while protecting a baby? I think I saw that in the cinema when it first came out...
@Scmbradley @christianp for more baby-protecting shootouts: Hard Boiled
@Scmbradley The first Matrix movie. A world where everything is a mind-bending illusion for nefarious purposes seems strangely apt right now.
@davidbcohen I was actually just thinking about how good the first matrix film was. Ooh yeah.

@Scmbradley

The Raid and The Raid 2 for me. Also the Karl Urban Judge Dredd.

@TheBreadmonkey yeah! I saw the raid quite recently. I don't remember enjoying the raid 2 as much but maybe I should give it another try.

I love films like the raid or the Karl urban dredd where the story is so so simple it gets out of the way. "Some guys are trying to get to a place (and then back out) ". Boom lets go. Fury Road is another great example.

@TheBreadmonkey @Scmbradley Ben the urban Dredd is the only good Dredd. As an old 2000ad fan , when I see the stallone Dredd I immediately turn it off.
@wendythedruid @TheBreadmonkey my hot take is that Stallone has been in precisely one good movie and that movie is demolition man. And it's good primarily because of Wesley snipes and Sandra bullock.
@Scmbradley @TheBreadmonkey that is arguably my favorite Stallone scifi film , and I watch it fairly regularly , specially when I’m down or need background noise: we would get along really well o think Scm
@Scmbradley @wendythedruid @TheBreadmonkey omg that's the one I liked
@kinsale42 @Scmbradley @TheBreadmonkey well for me it’s the stuff like Joe Dredd taking his helmet off , Stallone did , urban did not. That happened in the 2000ad comics , Dredds helmet came off all of three times and this was a constant , also urban held Dredd’s pure objectivity better IMHO
@wendythedruid @kinsale42 @Scmbradley @TheBreadmonkey I wish we could have got more Dredd, maybe a series. Lot of material out there to adapt. Not all of it great, I'd hope they'd skip Walter, and I don't think the Dark Judges would have worked with the realistic slant they put on it but there are one shots like America that would have been great. Maybe the Apocalypse War as an ongoing arc.

@woe2you @kinsale42 @Scmbradley @TheBreadmonkey

It has been my impression that Urban loved that role and has actively been trying to find a way to get back to it, so he could do it again.

I would support this.

@Scmbradley @wendythedruid @TheBreadmonkey I think that's not giving enough credit to Nigel Hawthorne.
@Scmbradley I love The Core, or pretty much any film with Unobtainium as an excuse to defy physics.

@Scmbradley

'F1' requires no brain activity to enjoy.

@Scmbradley The Beekeeper. One alleged factoid about bees made into a ridiculous, fun movie. And of course Die Hard.
@sebastian love me some Statham. Hell yeah. This is in the shortlist.
@Scmbradley Shin Kamen Rider, The Fall Guy, Pacific Rim, Tremora
@Scmbradley Predator. Kung-fu Hustle. Mortal Kombat. Zero grey-matter needed.
@toxy Mortal Kombat! That's a great shout. Wow yeah.

@Scmbradley I'd recommend Crank, or The Beekeeper as fun Jason Statham action flicks.

We also had fun with the bizarre Japanese punk band versus zombies (and aliens) film "Wild Zero" from (1999)

@Scmbradley Pacific Rim remains a go-to for me.
@Scmbradley
Assassination Bureau 1969. Oliver Reed and Diana Rigg are charming. Telly Savalas chews the scenery delightfully.
@Burn_this_ I'd not heard of this bit it sounds a lot of fun!

@Scmbradley Free
Fire from A24. “90 minutes of mindless shootouts”. Magnificent.

@Scmbradley
Cocaine Bear is surprisingly better than it has any right to be

Also, seconding the recommendation of Kung Fu Hustle

Oh, and Kung Fury starts as a brilliantly over the top parody of 80s action films, and then becomes even more absurd, all crammed into 30 minutes (Contains cartoon-style violence and gore from the start)

@Scmbradley the Bourne movies are fun, and the Riddick ones if you like a bit of sci fi in there.
@Scmbradley if you want cheese, Bruce Willis had a bunch of watchable cheese films
@kinsale42 I love the Bourne movies. I've watched them quite recently. I think even the Jeremy Renner one is pretty good.
@Scmbradley Find the old "Westworld" movie somewhere, it's a flippin classic. Also, if you REALLY mean the brain-switch-off thing, "Ultraviolet" with Milla Jovovich - for me definitely in "so bad it's kinda good" territory 🤣
