🚨 Mastodon DOES NOT ask you to verify yourself, EVER. 🚨

Currently there are scammers who want you to click a link by acting like #Mastodon staff

Please REPORT these accounts so we can ban them across the #Fediverse

WE DO NOT VERIFY PEOPLE ON MASTODON

@stux to paraphrase Australia's "my.id": on the Fediverse, the way I post verifies me
@sortius @stux Or, as someone else put it, my voice is my passport.

@sortius @stux "my shitpost is my passport. verify me."

@stux

One account that I've seen (but not received anything from) on Mastodon dot World has already been nuked, so their admins are finally paying attention

@stux Also seeing some sort of spam campaign regarding "monetizing your account" at the moment
@chris__martin @stux I also got it and suspended the account (a phishing attempt).
@chris__martin @stux Which is hilarious on the face of it. Of all the places to go to 'monetize your content' Mastodon ain't it. 😂
@stux one of the predictable issues with all this verification bullshit was fake verifications… annoying.

@stux

Bumped into one tonight too...

@xs4me2
Me too, obviously reported it.
@stux
@stux Thanks. I had two of these show up this afternoon. I didn’t see the point, so I blocked them. Sounds like I made the right call
@MarkBrigham
It is however important to report them before you block the post. In that way you help moderators to clean those accounts up and protect others.

@stux
what about #GazaVerified ?

@poisonpunk @stux that's a separate and (I believe) legitimate thing people are trying to manage.

I see a lot of #gazaverified people acting kinda spammy, though, but I am never sure it's not just a misunderstanding of how to use the platform or sheer desperation.

@poisonpunk @stux That’s very specific. And we never reach out to anyone to ask them to get verified.

(And I wish we didn’t need it.)

@stux

You keep our mastodon coffee pretty darn clean of bad stuff, thanx!

@stux arguably they are failing to act like "staff" too, anyone who actually understands how fedi instances are hosted should immediately recognize the scam I saw earlier
@stux #sharkey and #lemmy instances will not ask you to verify too, ever.
@stux my home address is 293 Tanglewood Dr, New Castle, PA 16105 can you please verify me
@stux Just reported one myself. Yeeesh. Where’d they all suddenly spring up from?
@stux But, but... how do I know if someone's a celebrity if there's no verification badge? :o
@stux
Lots of fake-looking accounts claiming to be from #Gaza 🇵🇸 and asking for #money recently. 🤦🏽‍♂️
@stux @aral I literally just got one from an account claiming to be mastodon staff, where they said they had noticed my posts are getting attention and offering me an opportunity for monetization, with a link to click on. I laughed and laughed and hit “report user,” because lol.
@stux I wonder how is Mastodon doing in countries that ban social media for kids?
@martaczc It's simply impossible to verify ages on such a large scale.
@stux Another attack vector enabled by the current "ID verification" craze. 🙄
@stux You can verify your account if you wish but that process is totally up to you. Nobody will ask you to do it and you control all aspects of the process yourself.
