Reactions mixed as B.C. to end time changes, adopt year-round daylight time | CBC News

Reactions range from applause to concern as March 8 will be the last time most British Columbians have to change their clocks, B.C. Premier David Eby announced Monday.

@misty they should have done permanent standard time

now WA/OR/CA can't synchronize with BC ever at this point
@ielenia We voted to do this years ago but delayed it trying to synchronize implementation with WA/OR/CA, who then never did it. So I feel like trying to optimize implementations around what works with those states wasn't going to turn out super well either way.
@misty we can't do permanent daylight time without an act of congress

if we all did permanent standard time that would have been perfectly doable as not participating in DST is actually an option

@ielenia @misty i don't see the point of choosing an option in order to synchronize with WA if they had no idea if WA was actually going to follow through. If WA wanted to synchronize with BC then they should have worked towards permanent standard time while BC was doing so.

Interpretation amendment act sets stage for year-round daylight time

The Province has introduced the interpretation amendment act to allow for a future move to permanent daylight saving time (DST) after 93% of British Columbian respondents indicated support for the change in a record-breaking public engagement.

BC Gov News
@artemist @misty in any case permanent daylight time seems like a bad idea with some seemingly unconsidered consequences, not to mention the often-cited "93%" figure never asked about preference for permanent standard time

@artemist @ielenia @misty

Across all regions, support for a change to year-round DST was over 90%.

looking at the survey report the province cites here

There were some limitations arising from the design of some survey questions as well. The first question in the survey asked respondents to indicate their preference of two options: maintaining the current system of changing the clocks twice a year, or moving to year round Pacific Daylight Saving Time (DST). The option to move to year-round Pacific Standard Time (ST) was not offered on the survey. As a result, the survey did not capture the proportion of British Columbians whose first preference would be to observe ST year-round.

90% my ass

@ielenia @misty Ever is a strong word. Some Oregonians have argued for Saving Time because it means longer activities in the evening. There’s nothing preventing the US West Coast from aligning to BC with Saving Time. Similarly there’s nothing preventing BC from realigning to Standard Time if the US West Coast gets its act together and goes for Standard.
@sylvie @misty well, there is something preventing us, which is the fact that congress has not allowed any changes to allow for permanent DST for a decade now, and it certainly doesnt seem like they have any motivation for that to change
@sylvie @misty permanent DST had been tried since 2016, with WA's law being written in 2019, but there hasnt been any successful movement to change the laws to allow that

@ielenia @misty Sure, but the US body of Congress can vote to allow it; there’s not a hex placed on US Congress that turns anyone who votes for permanent Standard or Saving into a newt thus preventing a permanent Standard or Saving from ever happening on the US West Coast.

Nor is there a curse placed on BC legislators that prevents them from changing from permanent Saving to Standard. Folks are perfectly capable of change. This BC change could be the first domino that kicks off more serious EU discussions which if enacted kicks off similar more serious discussions elsewhere as the US will be one of the few countries left that observes time change

@sylvie @misty my point isnt that it can't be done, just that permanent DST is significantly harder than permanent standard time

permanent standard time only requires an individual state to opt out, while permanent DST requires congressional approval which, if the last decade is anything to go by, is unlikely to happen any time soon
@misty @sylvie also I would like to point out that the US tried permanent DST briefly and everyone¹ hated it

¹this is hyperbole if it wasn't obvious but it did end up with less than a majority still supporting it
@misty fucking A. just a matter of time for AB to follow suit since we’re sandwiched now!
@misty wow this sucks now a third of the province has sunrise at 10am in winter
@misty omg I am so jealous 😭 but happy for you really 🤣 ... daylight savings is just sooooo the worst
@misty The only minor issue I see with this is I very much doubt our technology will acknowledge this and will still put our clocks back in November.😂
@misty Yet one more reason to move to Vancouver, damnit...
@misty My thoughts are with the IT support people who have to implement this with seven months’ warning.
@misty I wish it wasn't permanent DST but I suppose it's better than nothing

@misty Based on previous experiences where people have tried it, I strongly doubt it will be the "last" time people in BC change their clocks. Permanent standard time works ok. Permanent DST is hell on everyone except serious morning people during the winter. Sunrise after 9:00 in January in Vancouver... 🥱

Michael Herf wrote a nice piece about why permanent DST is rapidly rejected by the public after a few winters a few years ago: https://herf.medium.com/why-standard-time-is-better-e586b500923

@misty I am sure that many there will say that "it's about time"...?

@misty ahhhhh! nooo! it should stay standard time, not savings. they've stolen an hour and they're never giving it back! now 1pm is the sun's zenith!

ghouls!

@misty There's at least one area of BC that is on Alberta time (Golden is the one I know of). Wonder what they'll do... maybe keep being weird
@giflian Maybe swap to a Newfoundland-ish 0.5 hour time
@giflian @misty also the area up north near grande prairie. matching the adjacent town/city is why they have this so presumably they will continue to do that
@rakslice @misty Yeah, that probably makes the most sense if that's still important for those communities
@misty Too bad they're doing it the wrong way.
@misty OMG I'm so jelly!! 👍
