We’ve had a surprise outburst late last week, from a lesser known periodic comet. Posts flashed across message boards at the start of June alerting comet watchers to a dramatic change in brightness for periodic comet 220P McNaught. Though it wasn’t on our list for bright comets to watch for in 2026, Comet 220P is still shining at a respectable +9th magnitude, in range of binoculars or a small telescope low to the east at dawn as it heads towards perihelion this coming weekend.

Here’s our latest post on tracking Comet 220P for @universetoday - https://www.universetoday.com/articles/catch-comet-220p-mcnaught-in-outburst

Catch Comet 220P McNaught in Outburst

Back when I first got a cellphone and slowly started forgetting phone numbers I remember thinking "OK that is scary, it really didn't take long for me to forget something that used to be second nature for me"

It has been 25-30 years since then, and today I have no idea what the phone numbers of even my closest peers is. Not using that skill just entirely obliterated it from my brain over time. I am not even sure how much effort it would take to get back into it.

We worry about cognitive capture, what the LLMs of big tech are doing to our ability to identify and think through problems. We should be equally worried about them making a grab for our ethos, what we care about, and at population scales.

Still no sign of it slowing down. None of the big crawlers have dropped off since April 9.

3,602,589 hits yesterday, 187G, almost all HTTP 200 (success) on GET requests, a fraction of a percent is non-crawler traffic.

With the enormous amount of resources they have thrown at my own tarpit, one would expect someone doing periodic QC, checking content for sanity, perhaps an automated flagging system.

This level of hands-off automation feels genuinely AWOL, and doesn't bode well in itself.

Something to laugh at, its been a rough week but ya gotta dance it out #maker #joy

With Steven Spielberg’s new film "Disclosure Day" about to debut, scientists and educators will face a new barrage of questions from students and the public about UAPs.

Andrew Fraknoi has put together an updated guide to resources explaining what skeptics have found about UFO cases and claims. These include what really happened at Roswell and analyses of the recent spate of military images, videos, and Congressional testimony. The free guide can be found at: http://bit.ly/ufoskeptic (PDF)
