@misty they should have done permanent standard time

now WA/OR/CA can't synchronize with BC ever at this point
@ielenia @misty Ever is a strong word. Some Oregonians have argued for Saving Time because it means longer activities in the evening. There’s nothing preventing the US West Coast from aligning to BC with Saving Time. Similarly there’s nothing preventing BC from realigning to Standard Time if the US West Coast gets its act together and goes for Standard.
@sylvie @misty well, there is something preventing us, which is the fact that congress has not allowed any changes to allow for permanent DST for a decade now, and it certainly doesnt seem like they have any motivation for that to change
@sylvie @misty permanent DST had been tried since 2016, with WA's law being written in 2019, but there hasnt been any successful movement to change the laws to allow that

@ielenia @misty Sure, but the US body of Congress can vote to allow it; there’s not a hex placed on US Congress that turns anyone who votes for permanent Standard or Saving into a newt thus preventing a permanent Standard or Saving from ever happening on the US West Coast.

Nor is there a curse placed on BC legislators that prevents them from changing from permanent Saving to Standard. Folks are perfectly capable of change. This BC change could be the first domino that kicks off more serious EU discussions which if enacted kicks off similar more serious discussions elsewhere as the US will be one of the few countries left that observes time change

@sylvie @misty my point isnt that it can't be done, just that permanent DST is significantly harder than permanent standard time

permanent standard time only requires an individual state to opt out, while permanent DST requires congressional approval which, if the last decade is anything to go by, is unlikely to happen any time soon
@misty @sylvie also I would like to point out that the US tried permanent DST briefly and everyone¹ hated it

¹this is hyperbole if it wasn't obvious but it did end up with less than a majority still supporting it
