1/ Announcement: So today being a news day I might as well announce that the team at TheCanadian.Social has officially taken ownership of https://journa.host and https://newsie.social. We have also moved these instances to our facilities in Canada. These are two important instances hosting a large portion of the fediverse's journalism accounts. We felt it important to keep them going as the previous stewards were considering shutting them down. #fediverse #fediadmin #journalists

2/ I'd like to thank @jeff and his team for creating and stewarding a safe harbour for journalists in the fediverse. We hope that our small team can maintain the same levels of professionalism and dedication to keeping journalism alive and well in the fediverse. #fediverse #fediadmin #journalism.
@mike @jeff Thank you all so much for this!
3/ I'd also like to particularly thank @quaff who spearheaded the technical move and managed to do so with minimal downtime. It was a feat of ops engineering and we're very luck to have him. #fediverse #fediadmin #journalism

@mike happy to help Mike! Keeping these instances going is my small contribution to journalism and the fediverse. I'm really proud of you and our team for taking this on ❀️

@mike @quaff Damn! Well done and thanks, to both of you πŸ‘ I'll throw a donation your way to help keep the lights on πŸ˜ƒ

@mike @quaff thank you to all involved for helping in such a big way.

That is a smart and significant move for journalists. We need their servers safe.

@mike WOW! This is big news and it sounds like really good news! I’m sure a lot of work behind the scenes to get everything moved. Any further details that you can share, please do. Here’s to strong journalism and a safe place to host it.

@mike Huge news. I was shopping around for European-hosted instances, and this decision makes it far less urgent. Thank you!
@tferrer All gear and data are hosted in Canada. Hopefully that eases your concerns.
@mike @tferrer No country is safe from these kind of attacks, but some are much safer than others. Canada seems to be one of the safer at least.

@mike

This is great news Mike.

@mike Journa.Host has been blocked by many well-moderated instances on the Fediverse for transphobia, association with infamous doxxers, and other persistent moderation issues. Can we expect that under this new management, the instance will be moderated according to the rules set forth in the mastodon covenant?

@EveHasWords We follow the Mastodon Covenent however we will retain the right to make our own judgements on rule violations. Rule interpretation is subjective so of course you'll need to still make your own decisions on whom to block and not block. However please report anything you find offensive and we'll do our best to make a fair judgement. Also while in transition it might take us a while.

@mike @EveHasWords Our server had newsie.social limited ever since NewsMax set up an account there. The mods deleted the account after an outcry, but it was not handled well and did not leave us with confidence that future issues would be handled better.

In a fit of optimism I've unlimited newsie.social to welcome you, but some of your statements in the thread suggest you don't see reviewing publications as your job. If NewsMax or a similar disinfo source signed up today, would you reject them?

@skyfaller @EveHasWords We most likely would reject them. However I'd consider Newsmax an extreme example. I see ourselves as walking a line between welcoming diverging views and gatekeeping against harmful entities in the information space. We won't always get it right and not everyone is always going to agree with our decisions. Also I'd plead for some patience as we aclimate.
@mike does anyone really thinks AI replaces them because it is better? lol, ai generates trash, but it's cheaper, that's all it needs to be
@greensofshade It replaces journalism, not journalists.
@Halaana are you serious?
@greensofshade That we'll have AI slop instead of journalism, yes. It may look like journalism, but it isn't journalism.
@mike Thank you, Mike, for stepping up here. Much appreciated.
@mike hell yeah. great job getting those servers to a country that’s not america, also
@mike @drahardja Weren't they previously run by two separate (groups of) people?
@tokyo_0 @drahardja No, they were both run by a non profit called the fourth estate. They were looking to wind down.
@mike Thank you for the info β€” sounds like things had changed quite a lot since I last heard about how those instances were being run, and that things weren't going well. It's great that you've picked them up and are taking care of them (especially good to get the data out of the U.S.). They're important instances. Thank you for all your hard work! @drahardja
