Okay, #RaidersOfTheLostArk. Opening segment, the idol up through flying home.

Indy's pilot with the float plane. Is his name "Jock" or "Jacques"?

And is his accent British or American?

He flips from "oi, das jus moy pet snake reggay" to "c'maaan, show a liddle backbone, will ya?" from one line to the next.

This has been bugging me for *forty-five years*.

@ZenHeathen maybe he traveled a lot and speaks multiple dialects!
@ZenHeathen it is written that only upon his deathbed will Spielberg reveal who the hell the character was and where the hell he was from...we must continue our wait for the truth...stay strong.
@markyc46 Probably written on the Ark, lost somewhere in that damn warehouse
@ZenHeathen although, there can't be that many crates in there that spontaneously catch fire and emit strange rhythmic sounds that can bend rat's necks... should really be an easy spot if we're being honest about it.
@ZenHeathen Hard to make out the name. Jack or Jock. Accent sounds very US to me.
@ZenHeathen @VCP IIRC, in the novelization it was "Jock". I don't think the accents used in the movie were mentioned.

@ZenHeathen

Could he be American Cajun from the Louisiana Bayou?

@ZenHeathen always thought it was a South African actor trying to do an Aussie accent :)
@ZenHeathen How does the name read when you turn on captioning?
@gedeonm My copy doesn't have captioning.
@ZenHeathen Now we know! πŸ€“ I personally have always thought his name was Jacques. Cool!
@ZenHeathen might be related to Bert, with relatives in Ohio
@ZenHeathen he has a name tape on his shirt that says Jock. And he's an American (played by American pilot Fred Sorenson), the first line is "aw that's just mah pet snake reggie!", which is American accented. πŸ‘ (ETA pic)
@bransonturner See, that's another thing that's been bugging me. Perhaps I'm the only one who hears the Cockney accent on his first line. Am I imagining it?
@ZenHeathen its like when they caption Donald Duck with swearing and then you can only hear it that way.
@ZenHeathen I’m more bugged by the fact that it’s a two-seat plane- how was the guide (Alfred Molina’s character) supposed to get out?

@lds Maybe Indy met up with him and the others on location, near the hidden temple?

Honestly, in terms of plot and technical specifics, I think we have to give the whole opening segment a big pass, as it plays pretty fast and loose with the rules in order to set the stage, give us the big intro to "this is like old movie serials, right?" thing.

Forrestal is one of the few who's ever made it this far, and Indy is only just now getting this far, probably from following Forrestal's notes or something, right? So no modern person has found this temple before, maybe a couple of years ago. Yet Alfred Molina points out that no one has come out of there alive. Well hell--either Forrestal or Indy could have just found Al in a bar somewhere and asked him about the temple, and he'd have led them right here! No need to piece together scraps of ancient maps or anything; Mr. Molina seems to *know* this place*, and perhaps even have led others here before. Why isn't he the one walking in front, if he already knows where he's going?

But the accent thing--if I'm even hearing it, I'm still not 100% convinced I'm not imagining it--that's down to the actor or editing/ADR.
