this is crazy and I hope it doesn't spread. Linux the kernel is now more important then ever. https://www.tomshardware.com/software/operating-systems/california-introduces-age-verification-law

@djlink
Linux

*Not suitable for California

@djlink I don't see how this is possible. Is there going to be age verification on every docker instance? On the McDonald's ordering kiosk? On in-flight entertainment displays?
@hunterking people passing laws rarely understand the issue they are voting on
@djlink @hunterking
How to enable the age verification useflag on Gentoo? xD
@djlink The law applies to the provider of the OS. For Linux, who is that? I mean, I am sorry for Redhat, but Ubuntu isn't going to care. Canonical doesn't even have an office in California.

@djlink And considering all the devices that use an OS, wildly impossible to do. That oscilloscope? Runs Windows CE. Your car’s infotainment system? Some version of Linux. Your TV? Probably an Android variant.

You can’t right a law to cover all use cases, and a one size fits all is impossible. I thought California would be better about this

@FurryBeta @djlink

Sure we can, follow China's footsteps here. They have this system pretty well down already. All that's missing is a national OS to keep things simple : )

@simrak @djlink While that is a valid option, it’s not a road I’d rather go down ;) I was looking for some info on Chinese SoCs and was very surprised by the lack of https use on the websites that are for primarily internal China use. So full traffic monitoring is would need to be added
@djlink And this will be done with official ID, so any agency can track you. This is mass surveillance

@djlink “California introduces” ???

Don’t they mean *a* legislator in California?

@MisterMoo @djlink

It was signed into law last year, it goes into effect in 2027

@djlink

This Is Fucked Up!

@djlink omg data centers are going to get such a huge cutout because
a. not being able to use debian or arch on the cloud is going to piss off rich people
b. multi or non human ownership is real
