I recommend these easy first steps to #DigitalSovereignty for an average user:

1. Install @signalapp, and *delete* WhatsApp
2. Start using #Firefox or @librewolf with the @ublockorigin extension
3. Start using @libreoffice for documents and spreadsheets
4. Use a free opensource email client e.g. @thunderbird

All of the above can be done on non free operating systems.

Start experimenting with #Linux on a spare computer or laptop. All recommended software works there as well.

@janvlug Don't forget replacing the search engine with something like Brave, Qwant, or Startpage!
@anatomical_normalcy Yes, I forgot about this. Personally I use #duckduckgo.
@anatomical_normalcy @janvlug Ik gebruik zelf good-search.org. Europees, zonder advertentie verdienmodel. Ik betaal 5 euro per maand. Het is een kleine non profit organisatie uit Duitsland. Betalen kan helaas alleen nog via creditcard.

@janvlug @signalapp @librewolf @ublockorigin @libreoffice @thunderbird

And one can start using the browser more in stead of apps. Less tracking and less duopoly dependency (Apple/Google).

@voorstad

Very good suggestion!

@janvlug all items checked on the list for me; with the exception of Firefox/LibreWolf I moved to Vivaldi. Same for nixing the apps in favor of the browser.

@macronaut Nice! For me it is important that the software is free (as in speech) and opensource software (#FOSS). I checked the license of Vivaldi, it is not fully FOSS according to Wikipedia:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vivaldi_(web_browser)

Vivaldi (web browser) - Wikipedia

@janvlug @macronaut

Vivaldi is by far the most customizable and feature-rich browser today. It uses the open-source Chromium engine, only their interface additions are not open-source, but that does not worry me, as long as the company behind it is ethical. They must be able to monetize it somehow in order to be able to deliver a top product. And Vivaldi is simply excellent, especially for power users. You can adapt Vivaldi to your workflows, and not the other way around. Assuming Vivaldi were open-source, what would it change? Would you realistically inspect its source code?

@enjoyveganism @janvlug @macronaut I also chose Vivaldi. It’s European (Norway) and has a strong non-AI stance. And Vivaldi is on mastodon too; has it’s own server I believe.
Besides ublock I installed AdGuard and Privacy Badger as extentions.
Vivaldi syncs with their mobiele browser and other pc’s.

@teacher_rick @enjoyveganism @janvlug @macronaut

Vivaldi is Chromium-based and Chromium is (...) primarily developed and maintained by... Google.

Oh dear.

@ElBeeToots @teacher_rick @janvlug @macronaut

There are only 3 major web engines today: Gecko (Mozilla), Blink/Chromium and Webkit (Apple). All of them have their issues... And Mozilla is not holy.

@ElBeeToots @teacher_rick @enjoyveganism @janvlug @macronaut nope, zo werkt ie niet.
Chromium is open source basis.

@enjoyveganism

Vivaldi cannot:

  • block html canvas fingerprinting
  • have multiple PiPs
  • provide nested tab tree hierarchy
  • use uBO anymore, only the markedly inferior uBOL

it stopped being my browser several years ago because of 1 - 3, & the more recent 4 just banged the final nail into its coffin.

its multiple split-tabs function is brilliant, better than all other browsers, and i'd love to still be able to use it, but not at the expense of those listed items, alas.

for me, the oft-quoted bogeyman of "not 100% FOSS" is bogus, in that i trusted Jon & colleagues implicitly with Opera Presto, & see no reason why suddenly they would have chucked their fine ethics & principles out the door for Vivaldi. that's not & never has been the disincentive for me... the listed items are the problem.
