I recommend these easy first steps to #DigitalSovereignty for an average user:

1. Install @signalapp, and *delete* WhatsApp
2. Start using #Firefox or @librewolf with the @ublockorigin extension
3. Start using @libreoffice for documents and spreadsheets
4. Use a free opensource email client e.g. @thunderbird

All of the above can be done on non free operating systems.

Start experimenting with #Linux on a spare computer or laptop. All recommended software works there as well.

@janvlug all items checked on the list for me; with the exception of Firefox/LibreWolf I moved to Vivaldi. Same for nixing the apps in favor of the browser.

@macronaut Nice! For me it is important that the software is free (as in speech) and opensource software (#FOSS). I checked the license of Vivaldi, it is not fully FOSS according to Wikipedia:

Vivaldi is by far the most customizable and feature-rich browser today. It uses the open-source Chromium engine, only their interface additions are not open-source, but that does not worry me, as long as the company behind it is ethical. They must be able to monetize it somehow in order to be able to deliver a top product. And Vivaldi is simply excellent, especially for power users. You can adapt Vivaldi to your workflows, and not the other way around. Assuming Vivaldi were open-source, what would it change? Would you realistically inspect its source code?

@enjoyveganism @janvlug @macronaut I also chose Vivaldi. It’s European (Norway) and has a strong non-AI stance. And Vivaldi is on mastodon too; has it’s own server I believe.
Besides ublock I installed AdGuard and Privacy Badger as extentions.
Vivaldi syncs with their mobiele browser and other pc’s.

There are only 3 major web engines today: Gecko (Mozilla), Blink/Chromium and Webkit (Apple). All of them have their issues... And Mozilla is not holy.

Chromium is open source basis. Dus zowel Google als Vivaldi gebruiken dezelfde open source basis. Maar daarmee is er nog geen bemoeienis van Google met Vivaldi.
Het enige dat kan is dat voor doorontwikkeling (nieuwere versies) van de onderliggende technologie, Google keuzes maakt waar Vivaldi cq de community niet achter staat. Maar dan voer je die niet door.
