The only thing keeping my wife on #windows is #lightroom

I'm not a #photographer, so I don't know, but for the photographers out there who have used #darktable: How does it compare, can it be a solid replacement?

#photography #imageprocessing #linux

@delegatevoid I use Darktable instead of Lightroom for years. Not easy if you try to do it without documentation. But right you've seen one or two vidéos to catch advices, Darktable is really pleasant to use, very impressive on raw images. And once you know what you're doing, you do it faster than Lightroom.

@delegatevoid for image processing, it is similar in capabilities (disclaimer: I haven't used LR in like a decade), though not a drop-in replacement - some things are easier, most things are a little harder, it feels more technical.

Some capabilities of LR that aren't directly related to raw photo development are not present at all, like the online storage and sharing platform.

Fortunately, it is easy to try, and there are plenty of written and filmed tutorials.

@delegatevoid I've only used the mobile Lightroom version.
I find Darktable very powerful but not very user friendly. It has a rather steep learning curve and I find the interface difficult to understand. The interface does many things differently than I would have expected based on what I'm used to from other apps like Photoshop, Gimp or Lightroom mobile.
That said, I still use Darktable to edit all my photos and nothing else because I haven't found anything better yet.

@delegatevoid

RawTherapee also runs on Linux.

@lionelb @delegatevoid it's quite laggy though on KDE and wayland in my experience
@jamalix @lionelb I'll let her give it a try on #gnome, I never use #kde, I absolutely love #gnome :D

@delegatevoid Darktable is more and more mature. This recent support's site will told you much more: https://darktable.info/en/welcome-to-the-modern-darkroom/

Regards.

@delegatevoid It's a pretty big learning curve, as it works in a very different way from Lightroom, and the 'flow' I find very confusing.

But it can replace most of Lightroom.

@delegatevoid definitely can! The only thing unavailable is a mobile/ipad version. Since it’s free you can test it; a bit of LLM helps to understand the logic at first. What’s different vs LR is that May tools are available, so you have to “shop” your process first, once done it becomes very good ^^
