Did you ever have a day where you have one task.

And you open up the app, open the file...

Then spend 8 hours on a completely separate task, and wonder how it's already 5 pm?

(At least I got this particular clock down from 37 seconds off to 200ms off...)

Yeah it happens every once in a while
@geerlingguy literally describing my day right now.
@geerlingguy sounds familiar, and lately I've tried to underatand it as "yak shaving" http://www.catb.org/~esr/jargon/html/Y/yak-shaving.html
@geerlingguy
Congratulations, you saved 36.8 seconds.

Joke aside, it is funny how hard it is to count, and count right. Do you have any idea why it might have deviated 37 seconds? that is not a small deviation.
@murteza Leap second offset originally. Now hitting some annoying Intel driver bugs on Linux :)

@geerlingguy @murteza
along this same line....
How do you know how far you are off?
What are you using for your standard?
Aren't ntp.org or nist.gov good enough?

I'll bet you have covered this is one of your videos.... so if you want to just respond with the video url that would be all I could hope for.
I did see a video where you talk about how you build a time keeper for you lab to coordinate everything.
Thanks !

@AG100pct @murteza working on that.

One thing to note: all time is just an approximation. I'm off NIST by around 200ms, but it's harder to quantify over the public internet below 1 microsecond. But I'll get there :)

Working on distributing GPS time over PTP currently.

@geerlingguy It’s rare that I’ll ever have a single task. Exceedingly rare. Have you tried pomodoro and whatnot? Bujo? Those tools can sometimes help, depending on what phase of life I’m in.

Right now I’m in a taskwarrior phase. Works quite well. I’ll probably switch back to bujo once I’m less in the terminal.

@geerlingguy When I’m in a phase where I need to collaborate a lot, do a lot of small tasks, then taskwarrior works well. When I do more management, be it people or larger projects, then the paper supports come back, and I always gravitate back to my bujo format.

I tend to always have a ā€œparking lotā€ā€”either a page or a note where I write random ideas to explore later. Helps me focus on the task at hand.

@geerlingguy Just pretend that your primary task is secondary and your secondary task is primary. Then start your day with your primary task which is actually secondary and then switch to your secondary task which is primary. Then when you complete your secondary task you will have your primary task completed because your secondary task was actually primary and you were only pretending that it was secondary. And you win! That's what they call keep your priorities straight.
@jdoe @geerlingguy
Here! Here is that off_by_one error ! 🤣

@geerlingguy IME the higher you rise in rank as a programmer at a traditional job the more that happens.

Some days I miss just focusing on the thing I’m supposed to focus on.

@geerlingguy

Yak shaving? I think it applies more to clearing dependencies though

@geerlingguy I usually spend most of my time on a third level or deeper problem than what I’m supposed to be doing
@slyecho @geerlingguy
... then level you were supposed to be done. Supposed, cause at planing phase layers were not apparent.

Still haven't completed reading "Out of the Tar Pit" paper, .... about this, or, reflecting on this.

@geerlingguy I’ve found that often this is an indicator of more accidental complexity than is healthy for a project. Complexity management is a critical skill that really isn’t taught sufficiently, or for that matter, really isn’t identified as a problem sufficiently.

I’d try to find some time to reduce overall complexity down to as close to only essential complexity as you can, so that there are less things that can go wrong that can’t be avoided.

Fred Brooks’ ā€œNo Silver Bulletā€ paper from 1986 is a great introduction to the topic of complexity management. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_Silver_Bullet

@geerlingguy It me everyday. Srysly.
@geerlingguy most of my days 🤣🤣🤣

@geerlingguy You are experiencing the price of the pursuit of excellence. When I was employed, it often was difficult to convince management the time spent was worth it... and sometimes it is hit-or-miss, but you never know unless you pursue the "leave no stone unturned" (motto we used to attribute to the law firm of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher whose excellence was never in doubt)

@geerlingguy Sounds like what Iā€˜m doing every day.
@geerlingguy It’s rare but it happens very frequently šŸ™ƒ

@geerlingguy Now that I have retired I find it to be more a regular occurrence than an exception.
@geerlingguy Time flies…
@geerlingguy yep, all the time. I’m sure my wife would back me up on that.
