Tech Company: At long last, we have created the Torment Nexus from classic sci-fi novel Don't Create The Torment Nexus.

FOSS nerds: the Torment Nexus cannot be ethical until it is Open Source

@PavelASamsonov It also needs to run on solar energy. Or at least there needs to be an option to do so.
But then we are good.
@PavelASamsonov I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as “open” source, is in fact, “Free” or “Libre”, or as I've recently taken to calling it, “Free/Libre and Open Source Software”. Openness is not a Freedom unto itself...

@groxx
Is this discussion going to take a long time? I'd like to get on with the torment please. I appreciate the great work of the developers, don't get me wrong, but how hard can it be to just fix the licence and ship it?

@PavelASamsonov

@hakona @groxx @PavelASamsonov Once the license is fixed, I have some patches with some pet enhancements to submit
@PavelASamsonov I'm not interested in the Torment Nexus until I can self-host.
@PavelASamsonov I am Forking the Torment Nexus to create a Comfort Nexus.
@lemgandi @PavelASamsonov *looks inside* there's even more torment!

@PavelASamsonov

There are 7 "TormentNexus" or similar repos in Github.

@PavelASamsonov After the "OpenTorment" project changed their license from Apache2 to AGPL, the original author created the fork "LibreNexus". Most people recommend LibreNexus for tormenting, since OpenTorment ist pretty much unmaintained.

But I heard great things about torment.rs, a recent Rust rewrite.

@PavelASamsonov

Thank you.
This puts into words exactly my feelings.

@PavelASamsonov I only use it to externalise very light torment to poor people. Haters are such purists. 🙄
@PavelASamsonov Torment GNU/us, as my fellow hebephile Jeffrey suggested.

Techbro, first week on Fedi: it's optional! Once you're in Dave's Totally Optional Nexus, you're free to leave! Just put #noDavesNexus in your profile and we'll take you out when we get around to it!
@PavelASamsonov It looks like a rock into Doctorow's garden to me
@PavelASamsonov it'll need systemD so there's the chance to opt out, for now.
@PavelASamsonov Europeans: we need a European Torment Nexus!
@PavelASamsonov soon after: https://github.com/libretorment makes its appearance
@PavelASamsonov ...and of course someone went and created it for real 😂
@PavelASamsonov I vibe coded a Torment Nexus last weekend, could y'all check it out and tell me what you think?
@PavelASamsonov In fairness, the Nexus itself is often fine - the Torment part comes when the Nexus is monetised.
@PavelASamsonov the torment nexus is here whether you like it or not. gtfo with this purity culture, luddite 😤
since when is open souce even concerned with ethics?

free software is, but we do understand that failing to respect others' freedoms is just one out of many ways in which something could be unethical, and when the actions are carried out through software, the ethics failing is not of the software proper, but of that who controls it to behave unethically.

so maybe you're sort of right after all
@PavelASamsonov we had seen too much corporate open source that was unethical and finally led users and developers that trusted it to failures. so ethics is something more than just open source. it's a guarantee that the software respects users freedom and this is FOSS.
@PavelASamsonov the Torment Nexus also needs a formalized code of conduct for its Board of Directors
@PavelASamsonov don't get caught when using bittorment!
@PavelASamsonov I offer to be the lone maintainer of obscure but flexible supporting code upon which the entire Open TN depends, unfunded and underappreciated.
@PavelASamsonov my parents are TormentNexus users, because "their friends are there". I installed OpenTorment, but they don't use it! I try to explain it to them, but they just keep organizing their bowls group via TN.
Anyone have advice on how to convince them to ditch their friends and move to OpenTorment?

@PavelASamsonov

I will never embrace the Torment Nexus unless my job depends on it!
