UPDATE: thanks for all the good recs and sharing! i think i got a lot to forward :D

a medical professional in berlin asked me for a referral for paid help migrating from windows to debian on their work laptop (thinkpad), is there a cool small company (or freelancer) in berlin who does that sort of thing that you can recommend?

@mntmn i might know someone, ill forward it to them
@mntmn IN berlin and other linux-flavoured (Linux Stammtisch etc etc) organizations usally have a Basteltag - last weekend the AGB(!) even had one. Check the hashtag around digital independence, plenty of events/volunteers going around
@sushee @mntmn You think of https://in-berlin.de/ ? They're very good in what they do, but afaik don't offer the service for this case.

@mntmn i do that sort of work regularly

@mntmn

Here is an overview of local Linux user groups in Berlin
https://lug.berlin/

For instance, on the website of the Berliner Linux User Group e.V. you can find a contact form, I imagine these good people may be able to provide the referral you need.

@mntmn probably there's a LoCo (local community) that can help for free and use the payment as a donation.

@mntmn and I thought this was kind of the thing you were into!?

@alexantemachina @mntmn

I don't know mntmn at all, but looking at the task:

Knowing Linux well and using it all the time is different from porting a well-entrenched Windows user to Linux. Perhaps dedicated expertise is a useful thing to look for.

@bjb @mntmn in my experience one does not port a windows user to Linux.
Its more of a new start.
In case it is about a business it depends heavily on what they do/ what software they depend on.
@mntmn I would suggest looking into the FediHired hashtags and perhaps look into #Berlin specific hashtags to help increase visiblity.
@mntmn There's the Linux café at Technikmuseum: https://technikmuseum.berlin/veranstaltung/linux-cafe/ + I'll repost in case someone in my timeline does such things for money. 🙂

@mntmn since he is asking for commercial support forums, Stammtisch etc are going to be offputting.

Ich helfe gerne. PM to schedule a call?

@mntmn I know I'm digressing, but if it is not secret, I'm curious what they use for their directory/authentication server. FreeIPA?
@dfloyd888 you know any business asking on here isn't going to even be close to thinking about directory/authentication servers?
@mntmn

@shiri @mntmn

It may be something that does come up. Otherwise, they would go with AD/Entra... and if they are on Windows, that's pretty much the extent of their options.

@dfloyd888 ... I think you forget that the most popular option by far is not having a directory server... especially like this case where it's a single laptop...

You don't typically even consider it until you at least reach medium business, and a lot of them will just share auth files.

@mntmn

@shiri @mntmn

Very true. I'm just happy to see AD possibly replaced by something.

@mntmn I'd suggest where the Berlin Linux Users Group meet on Wednesday evenings, Lehrter Straße 53.

I went to a couple of their meetings a few months ago and the location is a small business community of Linux geeks, very knowledgeable. One of them is bound to be able to do this or point you in the right direction.

@mntmn a) @topio in Moabit (https://www.topio.info/) are doing that for a donation.

b) If in Schöneberg or very near Schöneberg, perhaps I could do it, depending on the details. (PM + ☎️ )

@mntmn The Technikmuseum Berlin seems to regularly organize Linux Cafes, I'm sure there are other non profits that do this as well in Berlin.

Linux-User-Group-Index & Stammtische - Linux Guides Community

@mntmn
@ainmosni we can look into this via ponc.tech, no?
@oliof @mntmn We could, I definitely have the experience to set up a Linux desktop.
