Sadio Mane, The Liverpool Star from Senegal (earning approximately 10.2 million dollars annually),has given the world a lesson in modesty after some fans spotted him carrying a cracked Iphone.His response is legendary:
"Why would I want ten Ferraris, 20 diamond watches and two jet planes? What would that do for the world? I starved, I worked in the fields, I played barefoot, and I didn't go to school. Now I can help people. I prefer to build schools and give poor people food or clothing. I have built schools [and] a stadium; we provide clothes, shoes, and food for people in extreme poverty. In addition, I give 70 euros per month to all people from a very poor Senegalese region in order to contribute to their family economy. I do not need to display luxury cars, luxury homes, trips, and even planes. I prefer that my people receive a little of what life has given me," Mane said.
@MarkHoltom What a crying shame that more of those with vast wealth don't share Mane's perspective.

@IndyRichard they will.

it is logical and far superior for anybody with that kind of money to do things like Mane is doing than to not do so and thereby give 8 billion people 20 stupid reasons to kidnap their family members.

@MarkHoltom The world needs more Sadio Mane's.
@DavidVC39
How can they be created?
@nuwagaba2 @DavidVC39 We have to ask his parents.

@danielauer

Rather the full Senegalese society.
Though it has its own problem and is clearly patriarchal (sometime to an extreme level - read Fatou Diome's "Le ventre de l'Atlantique") and also is deeply corrupted by capitalism's penetration, it bears genuine cultural values that are highly and profoundly humanistic.

@nuwagaba2 @DavidVC39

@nuwagaba2 we need to clone him πŸ˜…
@fh0
Can't we train our kids such morals?
@nuwagaba2 I'm not convinced that lack of morals is the issue.
I think it's a complicated issue that I'm far from understanding fully.
I think 99% have good morals and only want the best for others. We also have in some countries systems in place to ensure a living standard for everyone (which is getting reduced, while the rich ones get richer). In our capitalist system also other things get into the focus and our standards and demands grow and grow
🀷🀷
@fh0
Can we change tge system amd make it to the one where everyone benefits?
@nuwagaba2 the world is getting more authoritarian and more and more people vote for the far right, a lot of people or the majority seem to prefer to change it for the worse.
I hope the outlook is better where you are living
@fh0
Where i live things are worse that's why we do our best to make it a better place. Can I share with you about my community project?

@MarkHoltom

Accumulating wealth leads to a meaningless life. Serving others leads to a meaningful life. There must be more to life than having everything.

@MarcusMASTO @MarkHoltom

Of course you could do as most of the US billionaires do and build rockets or try and undermine democracy with buying up media and AI tech and get it supporting Far Right policies and nutters.

@cockneylaurie @MarcusMASTO @MarkHoltom Your comment is pitifully obvious and unfunny. BLOCK!
@MarkHoltom encouraging to see that some people are capable of logic 🀌
@MarkHoltom made my day β™₯️

@MarkHoltom This man is legit. But it does remind me of this post:

"Humble: #Texans star pass rusher Danielle Hunter still drives an old Nissan he bought over 10 YEARS AGO. He's made +$100 million in his career so far."

Clapped out Cherry? Not exactly. It's Godzilla. 600hp, 200mph, 60mph in under 3 seconds. Hardly slumming it!

@MarkHoltom some people are all too keen to forget where they came from - but some never do. They carry it with them and all credit to them.

@MarkHoltom wiped the floor with them.

(Also who the fuck is cutting onions in my office at this hour?)

@MarkHoltom Of couse he could also not buy an iPhone which, historically, always seemed to become cracked more often than Android ...

(Now i don't know if they had worse glass in the past or the folk that paid the premium were more careless with them??? But it certainly seemed a thing to me years ago. To Be fair I haven't seen anywhere near as many cracked phones recently as in the past)

@cockneylaurie @MarkHoltom iPhones tend to get used longer on average than Android phones, one reason being longer software update support from higher-end manufacturers like Google, Apple and Samsung. Apple doesn’t play in the low end segment of the market, so that skews things.

https://www.androidpolice.com/how-long-should-a-smartphone-last/

How long should a smartphone last?

Having a seven year software plan doesn't make sense when we buy phones yearly

Android Police

@ahltorp @MarkHoltom Interesting they say "It's no secret that iPhones live longer than Android phones." But quote no studies or such to support that statement

Most iPhone users I know change their phones out every 2 years because their contract allows that (which they pay through the nose for) or if they own it sell it off for a good price second hand. Personally I brought my android handset in November 2022 and am not in the market for anything new so that's a statement I have no reason to believe

I'm not sure that software support (bar security) worries most people at "the low end segment of the market" and I note the security updates on the OnePlus 13 are 6 years rather than the 4 for others, and frankly that's what matters for most folk

They blather on about "latest features" but it's a operating system... for most folk it's the apps that count and as long as they work (and quickly enough) ... well that’s good enough

(What kills most phones? Updates that slow it down!)

@cockneylaurie You have already explained what is happening here. Your iPhone-using acquaintances (perhaps because they have more disposable income) buy iPhones new. After a couple of years, they sell them to people who use them another couple of years. What did you think ”second hand” means?

But many people also buy new and use them for many years.

(And software updates are necessary in today’s world because of security issues)

@ahltorp
"(And software updates are necessary in today’s world because of security issues)" No as i said Security Updates which generally are provided for longer are necessary.

Updates for "new features" generally just bloat the phone and slow it down, so as to give you more wallpapers or some such. (Actually on Android many apps never require anything but the version before two that your phone comes with.

"What did you think ”second hand” means?" Really implied insults - Blocked

@xs4me2
What stops other people from becoming like him?

@nuwagaba2

Greed and habit…

@xs4me2
It's always good to do the right thing even when no one us watching and also not expecting to be paid back from any one. Do you teach your children not to be greedy?

@nuwagaba2

Current western society with its neoliberal capitalism and consumerism and its habits does...

@xs4me2
What can we do to create a society where all people don't have to face the challenges of poverty, poor health and standards of living as well as free from hunger?
@MarkHoltom that's what I would say, too, if I had no idea how to transfer my stuff to a new phone
@MarkHoltom I like and respect people who never forget where they came from. Similarly, I often say that Rashford is not the greatest player who kicked the ball for United, but he’s likely the greatest man who did, and that matters more.
I’m a die-hard United fan but I will never jeer Mane again.
@MarkHoltom May you be a steady example to the lost and the payed for Sadio Mane!
@MarkHoltom semoga selalu berkah amalnya.
@MarkHoltom While this behavior is commendable when earnest, I don't feel we should paint ManΓ© as an icon of virtue; he seems to have no moral qualms about participating in the Saudi Arabian sportswashing project or marrying a de facto child bride. This is to say nothing of the fact that, contrary to his claims, he has been documented maintaining a large luxury car collection.
If anything, I think this is also an indictment on Apple's draconian device fix procedures. If ManΓ© would rather keep his iPhone broken instead of shelling out for a replacement screen (or, let's be frank, a new phone), it's because it's expensive
@MarkHoltom The people who need to grasp this lesson are incapable of being shamed.
@MarkHoltom What's the Senegalese word for "mensch"?

@SteveBellovin

Goor.
And it has the same polysemy : it basically means "man", but also depending of context it means "someone with genuine and full humanity".

Note also that what Mane is doing is deeply rooted in traditional Senegalese values (which doesn't mean that everybody applies them sincerely - far from it - so kudos to him); and that the same values are behind a lot of the corruption there (anybody getting access to power is supposed to provide for all their relatives).

@MarkHoltom

@LibreFaso Thank you β€” this is great!
@MarkHoltom we need more people like this.
@MarkHoltom such a lesson for the selfish rich idiots out there, great that he is so thankful for his rewards
@MarkHoltom He still knows his roots

@MarkHoltom

if the extreme individualism, accumulation drive and consumerism that has come to define the "West" (but now also infecting Asian societies) could lead to happy, sustainable societies there might have been a case for it.

But the evidence is blowing in our face that it only leads to soul crushing alienation, anger, desperate addictions and destruction of our one and only habitat.

We really need to reboot. There is wisdom in older societies, but we also need to invent new ways.

@MarkHoltom that, and migrating phones is till a pain sometimes
@MarkHoltom Why can't more people (Trump, Musk, Thiel etc) look at him as a model
@MarkHoltom Really great man tbh. But this story is really old It was before 2020 I guess. But still that's a kind heart right there :)
@MarkHoltom This is the way. "When you have more than enough, don't build a bigger wall, build a bigger table." πŸ™
