I treat Mastodon like a secret, exclusive club. In 3+ years on here, I think I've told 3 people IRL about it. When they showed zero interest in it, I was like, oh thank god.
@the_etrain I told a bunch of people about it and no one had any interest to escape hell. I wish about a handful had...
@wendigo @the_etrain Same for me. I get the same response as when I tell a joke I think is funny. 🏏

@the_etrain

It's like a secret life.

@LikeItOrLumpIt
Not necessarily secret, just that I don't encounter many people that make me think they'd vibe with the fedi.

@the_etrain

I think I haven't met that many people IRL who would vibe with the "me" that's on the Fedi. And if feels like the more authentic me. If that makes any sense.

@LikeItOrLumpIt @the_etrain

Makes total sense and I relate to this.

We need a secret handshake.

@mastosalo @LikeItOrLumpIt
You just ask someone if they know Nicole from Toronto and give a little wink.

@the_etrain @LikeItOrLumpIt

Fedi is for me like the pig is for Marvin in the movie Red.

🐷

@LikeItOrLumpIt @the_etrain we try to explain, they don't get it, we say that's the point, and we move on. 🀫

@the_etrain When I mention something that I discovered or learned here and they ask where I saw it..😳

um, how do I explain the secret third thing?

@the_etrain it is a strange. I talk to people who know very well that #meta has killed teen girls, and had a hand in the Rohingya genocide. These are largely people opposed to genocide in other places. Largely people who do love their children. But they stay on #Facebook and #Instagram, just like the baker in Schindler's List keeps on baking.
@stalbaum
Unless they personally witness Mark Zuckerberg murdering someone, it isn't real. Even then, some people would stay.
@the_etrain this place is our Yarvin IV, if it gets too well known the Death Star will come for us.
@the_etrain I used to tell a lot of people about Mastodon then they ask me to explain it and both them and I walk away frustrated. It's the type of thing that is kind of exclusive because there's a cognitive barrier to entry, even though I loath saying that out loud.
@mike
It's true.
@the_etrain I also used to have aspirations of running a large community. Now I see my instance as more like a tree fort where my friends and I hang out and I've learned that's probably for the best.
@mike
Absolutely. Beige isn't a big instance either, and it's a big reason I like it so much.
@the_etrain
My IRL people are quite accustomed to my unusual interests, so they are less curious about this than my Korean learning or other odd things that I do.
@the_etrain I vibe with this and with most of the responses thus far. πŸ€˜πŸ€˜πŸ€˜πŸ––
@the_etrain I have a coworker who I'd call a friend who I've told about the fediverse because I thought he'd like it. I think it was in one ear, out the other. That's cool. I like it here. πŸ™ƒ
@the_etrain I always call it "my nerd social network" and that seems to keep em away.

@the_etrain

Ha! So very very "Snap!" here 😁

@the_etrain

The Groucho Marx defense

@the_etrain same. I tried to spread the word when I first signed up, but, I realized I like it better the way it is.
@the_etrain Mastodon was the place I went into hiding after Discord went terribly wrong.

@the_etrain The first rule of Mastodon Club is, we constantly talk about Mastodon Club.

(And despite that, no one joins..)

@the_etrain I like that. I also appreciate being among people who want to/choose to be here.
@the_etrain my twin brother, that's it. Have I mentioned what a good-looking guy he is?
@the_etrain
Feel that so deeply.
It's not easy to explain, but easy to use. It's so nicely weird and then "ok, my instance is metalhead.club" do, oh well. πŸ˜…
@the_etrain I once mentioned on Facebook that it was 'like the old-school twitter without AI'. Someone informed me that they didn't want to join because they didn't like the name, and someone started arguing that you can't run anything for free because someone has to pay for electricity. I thought, this is clearly not for these people, and left the conversation.
@the_etrain the first rule of divergence club is dont divulge jack shit about divergence club
@the_etrain I think people on traditional social media either 1. like it or 2. they sort of like it, but really like bitching about it, and have no desire to search for a better alternative.

@the_etrain
very much this
my pitch is "it's like IRC but with pictures"

which, these days, nobody understands.

and if I share something I only say "this crossed my timeline"

@the_etrain I know one person IRL who’s on jorts horse. He won’t tell me his username and I don’t want to find it out.
