So many liberated #chromebook stories here.

Sadly all weak 16gig models, but great for #debian #xfce

Overall huge #linux wins

@codemonkeymike Could use it as a server with integrated UPS?
@dalstroka @codemonkeymike I use a Chromebook as a server. It works great but I occasionally get errors on disks connected through USB. And because my / partition is also connected through USB Linux occasionally has errors that stop it from working until a restart. Personally I'm going to switch to using a desktop with SATA hard drives connected directly through SATA. But yeah even using a Chromebook as a server is not bad.
@codemonkeymike
where are you getting these, donations or buying used lots?

@dlakelan these are all donations. I run a local non profit.

@codemonkeymike Guess we need nixbook super light edition 😂️
@Techwizz haha the xlite lol. But that's the issue. NixOS is amazing, but not light on disk usage.
@codemonkeymike how many GB is your install?
@BigHeadMode the Debian XFCE? It's like 4g total

@codemonkeymike

Do you happen to know if I can get Linux on my Chromebook?

Lenovo IdeaPad 5 Chromebook 82M8001YGE - 14" FHD IPS, Intel Core i3-1115G4, 4GB RAM, 128 GB SSD, Chrome OS

Regards

@tux I don't know without trying. But in my experience most older Intel Chromebooks work.

It all hinges on the Mrchromebox firmware. So look up of you can do that. And white gold

How to convert an old ChromeBook into a NixBook

I have a confession. I kinda like Chromebooks.

@tux @codemonkeymike
your #chromebook comes already with Linux, (Crostini)

To enable Crostini:

Go to Settings > About Chrome OS > Linux.
Click Turn on and wait for the Linux environment to install.
Once enabled, you can use the terminal and install Linux applications like GIMP, LibreOffice, Python, Node.js, and more.

@giosci @tux yeah but the browser is already wicked out of date. These expired chromebooks can only be secure and useful if jail broken

@codemonkeymike @tux

I installed, through #Crostini / #Linux the #VivaldiBrowser and #Bravebrowser so I don't use the Chrome browser.
And Linux / Crostini is sandboxed
