Baseball spring training has started. I’m excited but also because this is the year where pitches can be challenged via the robot umps. Gonna be a literal game changer. ⚾️#Baseball
This Red Sox Twins game I’m watching has already had three pitches overturned. The best part is that unlike video replay challenges these challenges are not subject to interpretation by human beings. So they know instantly whether they pitches right or wrong and the game corrects and proceeds very quickly. 🤓 ⚾️ #Baseball
@gedeonm That being the case, why not just replace that umpire with the robocops? Wouldn't ALL the calls be correct then?
@KingShawn All the pitches, yeah. Not all the calls at home plate though. I suspect they may move towards all balls/strikes called by the robos eventually. Gotta see how this season goes.

@gedeonm I think we'll always need human umps to make the other calls but RoboUmps will undoubtedly take over balls and strikes inside three years, IMO.

Which will be a (small) shame. I kinda like the “unpredictability" of the human umps. :)

Baseball AI
I’m not so sure I’m in favor

@RedStateExile It’s not really AI, it’s a precise measuring system and since it doesn’t involve any interpretation (a pitch is either in the strike zone or it’s not) it feels more like Olympic finish line timers or tennis base line serve umpires that have been in use for many years.

There are also a limited number of times a team can challenge a pitch which I think is a great way to save the system for key moments in a baseball game. I find it all fascinating. 🤓
