this is the kind of meme that pisses me off for it’s lack of one huge piece of evidence: DATE

today's #AltTxt #yaddayadda is about the historic FEBRUARY 12 2026 #GeneralStrike in #India

❝ 300 million workers just shut down India.

The largest strike in human history, and most of the Western media barely whispered it. That silence is complicity in Modi’s war on workers’ rights.

Thursday and Friday of this week (19-20th February 2026) another historic 24hr #generalStrike happened in #Argentina; and of course #USA media downplayed the fact more than 400 commercial airline flights had to be cancelled because “dozens” or workers protested on the streets and "a few thousands" stayed at home to protest Milei’s evisceration of labor protections.

here’s the thing:

a 24-hour #generalStrike is only good for the organizing experience; of finding out who are your allies. rarely do 24 hour strikes effect change.

we need sustained striking, slowing down, wildcatting and protesting to effect change.

#France’s #Mai68 May 1968 protests and strike ―which spread across the world― are still one of the most successful examples of shutting shit down:

and what is most significant about the #RickyRenuncia protests is that

🗣 THE VAST MAJORITY OF PUERTO RICANS PROTESTING WHERE NOT UNIONIZED

a 24-hour strike won’t change anything. sustained disruption & protest will.

@blogdiva
This is an important point. I think a lot of people in the USA need to think more about what highly effective actions will have to look like, and what was effective or less effective about actions after they take place.

I do think 24 hour strikes can contribute to effecting change. They show both sides potential strength which can change the actions of the target. Here in Minneapolis I think because there has been extremely strong organizing for rapid response and mutual aid, the 24 hour strike helped show even further untapped organizing potential that helped bring change. But especially on their own, 24 hour strikes do not force change very effectively.

@blogdiva yep this is the regime T bailed out.
@blogdiva why do you think all the billionaires target unions? Every single one. With Bezos and Musk up front
@blogdiva Where does the 300 million number come from? The linked article says 600k.
@blogdiva I should clarify that 600k is still amazing, but 300 million would be a group the size of almost the full population of the US and 20% the population of India.
@ramsey @blogdiva multiple English sources I could find quote 30 crore Which, unless I misunderstood the meaning, is 300 million: https://m.economictimes.com/news/india/nationwide-strike-on-thursday-to-see-30-crore-workers-participation-trade-unions/articleshow/128116652.cms
Nationwide strike on Thursday to see 30 crore workers participation: Trade Unions

A nationwide general strike is confirmed for February 12. Over 30 crore workers are expected to participate. This protest aims to resist government policies affecting workers and farmers. The strike will impact 600 districts. Farmers' groups and agricultural workers' unions are supporting the call. Key demands include scrapping labour codes and specific bills.

Economic Times
@ramsey @blogdiva I believe that 600k is from just one state, state of karnataka.

Other sources from India discount the claim and report much smaller numbers in different locations.

Also, a nationwide strike doesn't seem to be super unusual in India. If you search for the relevant local term "Bharat Bandh" plus any year, a number of news articles will come up

@coatilex @ramsey @blogdiva

the article mentions 30 crore (300 million) workers were contacted by their trade unions about the strike - the adult population of India is about 1 billion (or 100 crore).

Is likely a smaller portion of them actually took part in the strike(s) and the impact was relatively minor (due to the sheer size of the population), but strikes and protests definitely did happen..

@ramsey 300 million is correct, and as you can see from many replies you were incorrect. Have you apologized to @blogdiva yet?
@CuriousMagpie @ramsey please, don't do this. there’s no need for drama.
@blogdiva sorry - high pain day makes me touchy about others being belittled. @ramsey
@CuriousMagpie @blogdiva I don’t think I said anything belittling, but if that’s how it came across, I apologize. It was not my intent.

just for the record:

next time, back up your comments with as many sources as i give. don’t sit their and tear down not only the work of women and PoC on here, but the activism of a whole fucking country of people that don't look like you.

compared to Indians, Puerto Ricans, and Argentinians, white americans look like entitled cowards. so as a representative of your people, don't go questioning the activism of the Global South when you got nothing to show.

@ramsey @CuriousMagpie

@blogdiva @CuriousMagpie I’m very sorry for the way this came across. It was not my intent to rebut your post, and I wasn’t saying or implying that you were wrong in any way. I wasn’t trying to debate you.
India unions and farmers stage strike over US trade deal

A broad coalition of unions and farmers in India has held a one-day national strike against an interim trade deal with the United States. The strike Thursday disrupted some public services and factory work. Protest leaders say the pact harms small farmers, workers and local businesses. Opposition lawmakers in parliament demanded the deal be scrapped. Union leaders say the deal opens India to subsidized American farm products. They also condemn privatization and new labor codes. The government defends the pact and says it protects farmers. U.S. and Indian officials say the framework lowers tariffs and deepens ties.
