Guillermo Beltrán walked away with two heavy bags on Thursday, each containing an essential haul — rice, beans, amaranth and crackers — complemented by a bottle of oil, large cans of sardines and canned peaches. Every label carried the same simple phrase “Made in #Mexico.”

Beltrán, a 70-year-old Cuban father of two, was one of several hundred recipients of #Mexican #humanitarian assistance, ordered by President #ClaudiaSheinbaum in support of the island nation as it faces blackouts and severe fuel shortages worsened by a #US #oil #embargo.

“I feel very grateful,” said Beltrán. “The Mexican president should be praised to the skies for showing such concern and courage.”

Cubans thank Mexico for food donations as energy crisis deepens

Mexico is sending major food aid to Cuba as the island struggles with fuel shortages and widespread blackouts. On Thursday, hundreds of people in Havana received bags of staples marked “Made in Mexico.” Mexico’s navy ships have brought roughly 800 tons of supplies to the island. The Cuban government says the food supports vulnerable families, including homes with underweight children or elderly relatives. State media has shown images of deliveries moving through bodegas, which use the ration book system. The crisis has grown since 2020 amid tighter U.S. sanctions and new pressure on oil sales.

@Peter_Link I agree with “oil for Cuba” as a band-aid on their current crisis.

But a tanker of oil should be accompanied by a massive, rapid up-scaling of wind, solar, storage, grid updates, energy efficiency is needed to power Cuba and remove oil dependence as a geopolitical weapon.

It’s happening (https://www.the-independent.com/news/world/americas/cuba-blackouts-trump-us-oil-b2924702.html#) but not fast enough.

US sanctions and a deep economic crisis have for years made it impossible for the government to buy enough fuel

@Peter_Link I’ve been diving into the humanitarian crisis in Cuba over the past day. Doing some digging into ngo relief organizations.

Do you have any recommendations of orgs doing good work on the ground? Especially food, medicine, & household solar?

@MarkBrigham

For medical supplies, the outstanding one for Cuba is Global Health Partners (https://ghpartners.org/)
Over the years, they have sent millions of dollars of medical aid, both from financial donations and supplies directly donated by hospitals. They have a US Treasury license, so the process is usually smooth.

I'm checking on food and solar panels, and will get back to you.
