UPDATE: It seems that the video is made by AI. I contacted the channel owner but no reply. So this is a made up story.

A huge shift in tech: Now Lenovo sells PCs and laptops with pre-installed Linux and provide full support.

This makes me as Ubuntu user very happy.

Buy a Lenovo Linux PC/laptop and enjoy a computer that belongs to you and doesn't spy on you like Windows 11.

Bill Gates FURIOUS As Lenovo DITCHES Windows For Linux

YouTube

Hello all, I haven't been able to find Lenovo's official announcement about this.

Despite Lenovo's devices being very Linux friendly for a long time, this is something different: Lenovo would pre-installed Linux by default, and Windows only by request with additional fees.

So please take this news as unfounded until it's verified.

I'm sorry to have shared this video too early πŸ™πŸ½πŸ™πŸ½πŸ™πŸ½

@sslaia the Lenovo website shows many laptops (Thinkpad) that are Β« AI ready Β». What is that ? Do we pay more because of that ?
@pierre_bernard According to the video, you'd have to pay extra now for Windows and you'd have to ask for it. AI PC is heavily marketed by Microsoft.
@sslaia so, if you want to purchase a laptop for Linux, you should avoid β€œAI PC” ?

@pierre_bernard @sslaia It will probably run Linux just fine and if you want to use a *local* AI application under Linux, that application can benefit from the additional NPU that is present besides the regular CPU and GPU in "AI PCs".

It's partly also a Microsoft-related marketing term. See this article: https://www.tomshardware.com/laptops/what-is-an-ai-pc

What is an AI PC and do you actually need one?

AI PCs are all the rage, but what actually is an AI PC, anyway?

@sslaia

To my knowledge Lenovo always did well with Linux. Good to hear it is now officially supported.
And definitely good news for every private user.

@sslaia The video preview is... AI-generated. Also, Bill Gates is long gone as CEO so he probably doesn't give a flying copulation about Lenovo (and Dell!) giving the option of installing Linux instead of Windows.

He has other problems too, because he's mentioned in the Epstein Files rather often.

@sslaia

"A computer is like air conditioning - it becomes useless when you open Windows."

@sslaia Good on them. No more paying the Microsoft tax - where you have to pay for a Windows license even though the first thing you'll do when you get home is format the hard drive.
@sslaia shitty clickbait. why would bill gates give a fuck what Lenovo do?
@sslaia ... Long overdue. Kudos to Lenovo and others supporting Open Source alternatives. 🐧

@sslaia Seems to be completely false. I'm looking at the Lenovo site, and you can't even search for any OS except Windows or NVIDIA DGX.

The offerings are full of Copilot+ PCs.

@sslaia This is really going to upset the people who get mad when you talk about Linux.

Oh well.

@sslaia That really sounds like great news. If anybody has reliable articles, official statements, or reports from reputable outlets that back this up, please share the links.

@sslaia Meanwhile, (and I might be preaching to the wrong crowd here) there ARE manufacturers who ship Linux first computers NOW and have been doing so for years:
@tuxedocomputers @slimbook @starlabssystems @junocomputers @system76

Are a few that come to mind. What we need are Linux PCs on big box shelves, so yes Lenovo doing that would be great, but until then...

@sslaia Even if not verified for Lenovo, it is verified for Dell. So expect others to follow.
@sslaia Thank you for the update!

@sslaia You're saying this isn't real - and yes, the video itself is AI slop click-bait. But I boosted this originally because I verified it.

Lenovo didn't dump Windows, but they do offer Linux builds - your choice of Ubuntu or Fedora.

Plus, independently, I've had extremely positive experiences with Lenovo laptops and Debian. Just works, no messing with drivers etc. Much better than Dells I've fought with in the past.

@zazzoo It's true that Lenovo PCs are Linux friendly. I'm using one myself. The same story with Dell. My Inspiron 5480 has been running Ubuntu for many years without issues.

However that video is wrong because Lenovo has not announced that all its PCs are now pre-installed with Linux and Windows is only available by request and additional price. At least I haven't found any Lenovo official statement about this.
