Mike Luckovich political cartoon
UK. US
Justice vs Just ICE
Andrew being led away by cop vs cop leading away a kid.
@saskboy @rbreich Andrew might be leering at the kid ICE has in handcuffs
@saskboy
Aren't laws the ones to provide justice?
@rbreich "There is no justice. Just ice." -- Mr. Freeze
@rbreich Hah. But let's not get too carried away. You can still get cuffed for supporting Palestine Action in the UK. That and ICE's brutality are pretty closely linked. Fascists gonna fash.
@themooserooster @rbreich I think we’re right to be worried about the direction of travel in the UK but the US is a long way ahead of us down that road

@rbreich

Hey, don't forget the US Department of Just... erm... Something, which redacted all the names of the suspects in the Epstein files and released them with all the presumed victims intact. And has never, to this day, interviewed any of them on any topic. Or even compiled a contact list of them.

Americans have a queer notion of justice.

@rbreich alt text: split screen in a political cartoon. To the left: “In UK” at top; under we see a cop arresting Prince Andrew; “Justice” at the bottom.

To the right: “In US” at top; A masked, armed man with ICE on his military gear is arresting a little girl in a pink coat; “Just Ice” at the bottom.

@rbreich
For the most part, the concept of "justice" in the US is just "protect the rich".

@rbreich

“I pulled up behind a Cadillac
We were waiting for the light
And I took a look at his license plate
It said, "just ice"
Is justice just ice?
Governed by greed and lust?
Just the strong doing what they can
And the weak suffering what they must?
Oh, and the gas leaks
And the oil spills
And sex sells everything
Sex kills”

–Joni Mitchell, “Sex Kills” on Turbulent Indigo, 1994

@rbreich yeah but they let him go without charges
@bweller @rbreich UK law tldr - he was arrested "under suspicion". This is part of the evidence gathering stage. Later he will be arrested and charged.
@rbreich I'm skeptic if this arrest will be worth it. Also, if this investigation is gonna pay off. He could still get protected by his brother (the King).
@miggi @rbreich What will be interesting is that the King will probably bankroll his defence while also being the prosecutor. The royal family will close ranks because their survival depends on it, so there will be no problem feeding #AndrewFormerlyKnownAsPrince to the wolves.
@miggi I don't think Charles even likes Andrew, so he won't get the support he would have from his mother.
@nohaironheed We don't know 🤷‍♂️

@rbreich

Exactly… the USA are morally and ethically bankrupt…

Only justice will be able to mend it.

@laetsgo hmm the cartoon: Let’s see if the former Duke is actually jailed. It’s very uncommon indeed for the U.K. state to imprison anyone who turns up in court in an expensive suit sadly.
I have though, thought for a long time that the USA bleating about not having a monarchy is a hollow boast when they allow their President’s to get away with anything, and frequently anoint their successors who are often relations.
@bobthomson70 oh ! so sorry ! I completely missed you're @
besides the point now
@laetsgo I did read in relation to Mandelson’s arrest that Misconduct in Public Office is a difficult charge to prove. Probably depends on a document trail, so I can see why that would be a challenge if folk have clandestine meetings and phone calls.

@bobthomson70 out of the blue, makes me think of the laundry Files and all « deniable » matters/assets

(But I shall admit that I had some drinks so I might be irrelevant)

@laetsgo indeed, plausible deniability beloved of nefarious groups.
