Why are there dual-gauge tram tracks in Braunschweig, Germany? #braunschweig🇩🇪🤗 #germany #deutschland #travel #trains #trams #straßenbahn #transit #publictransit #publictransport
@talesfeomthesbahn Would there have been cities with that feature, or would this have been first of its Kind?
@talesfeomthesbahn And in its infinite wisdom the city installs the tracks throughout the whole city, completely finished the project planning only to be scrapped in 2010, because some profitability calculation wasn't looking as good as the federal ministry of transport wanted it to be and the provincial government couldn't be bothered to couch up the money missing funds. Millions wasted and a real setback for the region.
@talesfeomthesbahn the idea has been skipped some years ago. Bath in the city centre the 3rd track is still laid. In other parts it have been taken away already again
Fun fact: train gauge was originally set to match the width of a roman cart. Our most modern public transportation is still using standards from 2000 years ago
