“People tell chatbots about their medical fears, their relationship problems, their beliefs about God and the afterlife.

Advertising built on that archive creates a potential for manipulating users in ways we don’t have the tools to understand, let alone prevent.”

Oh I am in trouble? Thank god, COD and Zeus whose tagging (writing on the wall) I saw yesterday.

@Em0nM4stodon THIS is the way AI can destroy the world. Not taking over Nuclear Silos or whatever.
@Em0nM4stodon Beyond grim - that deeply intrusive, manipulative access in the wrong, powerful hands.

@Em0nM4stodon I mean, better late than never, but this kind of realization should have come years ago for these people.

Years ago, it was already abundantly clear that these companies do not care about copyright, user privacy, environment, or, well, anything besides their profits, market share, and bullshit metrics like "engagement".

@Em0nM4stodon targeting ads based on search history is one level. Having a fake psychologist that targets ads at you is a whole-nother-level.

@Em0nM4stodon

So, which is more disturbing, the topics people talk about to some computer code, or the fact that we know what those topics are, when the people probably thought they were speaking privately?

I think it's the fact that we know

Also, the concerns re manipulating in the article.

On Extraction and Innovation: Startups Aren’t Bee Colonies

The first time I approached a beehive, I was nineteen, dressed in a crisp new white bee suit at Cal Poly’s apiary, smoker in hand for my beekeeping class. Dozens of stacked brood boxes stood out in the orchard on the northwest corner of campus. The roar of a
