I want to replace my aging Synology with an Intel N150 based NUC. I mostly need it for #Plex transcoding and to act as an #Apple Time-machine NAS for 2 laptops. I tend to larger sized setups so that I can keep them running for 10+ years.

I plan to keep it off the internet. I am planning to go with 16GB ram, 500 GB SSD and then probably attach a 2TB old school hard drive via USB 3.

I am looking for manufacturer recommendations (are there any European options?) as well as OS recommendations.

@lsmith I think @geerlingguy might have some info on this

@kboyd @lsmith There are a bunch nowadays; the biggest question is DIY (like buy an N150 motherboard, then have your own PC case and everything?), or buy prebuilt?

There are some nice tiny ones like Zimaboard or Radxa X4. Then some good larger boards like Lattepanda Mu. Then a few good mini PCs from Beelink, GMKTec, etc.

@geerlingguy thx for your response. had already literally watched one of your recent videos on the topic. I probably want to go pre-assembled. was hoping for a manufacturer from Europe. but looks like there is Blue Jour but seemingly impossible to find @kboyd
@geerlingguy that being said, I have been a bit attracted to the Zimbaboard 2 and ZimaOS. it kinda is a bit build on your own but not. but it is not European and I am not sure yet how the community around this OS works @kboyd

@lsmith @kboyd Zima's a little pricier, but fine. I would probably use my own OS install but some people do like their OS flavor.

It's very hard to find an EU manufacturer for most things compute :(

@geerlingguy thx. are there at least some N100/N150 devices that come without the Microsoft-Tex? Beelink seems to come with a Windows Home license, which I would not want to pay for @kboyd

@geerlingguy new plan. It seems the #raspberrypi 4 I have laying around from a previous abandoned project should be sufficient to run #plex on my #appletv4k.

I now ordered 2x 5TB 2.5” drives and encosures. one to attach to the #NAS and the other to my laptop whenever I do video work. will set up CarbonCopyCloner to auto-sync whenever the external drive is attached.

Will attach another 2TB 2.5 drive I still have for Time-machine backups.

2x 2.5” HDD is decently power efficient.

@geerlingguy In terms of OS from what I read #OpenMediaVault seems to be the best choice for out of the box #ARM support. I am not so excited about having to do a lot of research to pick and choose plugins but so it goes.
