#NewYearResolution2026: Never let people tell you it's impossible to deGoogle your life. 💪

➡️ Find out the names to the icons: https://tuta.com/blog/degoogle-list

@Tutanota You could also add peertube and matrix chat to your list!

@Tutanota a few suggestions:

Email: Proton (yes yes I know, but you mention them in calendars anyway.)

Translate: DeepL (?)

Browsers: I know they're Chromium, but options like Vivaldi and (reluctantly) Brave aren't half bad.

App Store: Obtainium

Android: Drop Calyx, its not actively being developed right now and is more of a security hazard than anything.

Maps: HEREWeGo (HERE Maps) is honestly pretty alright.

SmartWatch (WearOS): GadgetBridge, Garmin(?)

Google Home: Homeassistant

@Tutanota Couple others:

News: Any RSS apps (eg Feeder)

Wallet: Not great options. But loyalty cards work in Catima. NFC payments are tricky. Some (non U.S.) banks... and Garmin Watch again...

ToDo: Tasks.org, jtx Board

Weather: Breezy Weather

I'm a dummy. I just remembered.

SmartWatch (again) : Pebble! They're back! 🎉

@JefferyT51 @Tutanota

There is a new, really good chromium-based browser, that says it is better than Brave - Helium.

@JefferyT51 @Tutanota Vivaldi is proprietary and is unethical and unjust and should be avoided. You should never suggest this browser.
@rebel1725 @JefferyT51 @Tutanota Please explain why @Vivaldi is "unethical and unjust"! I'm curious.
@HalleAndert @JefferyT51 @Tutanota @Vivaldi It is all explained in Vivaldi's EULA. Vivaldi is proprietary and don't allow the users to study or modify it. This takes away the users' control over their computing, but by contrast let the computing control the users. https://vivaldi.com/privacy/vivaldi-end-user-license-agreement/
Vivaldi End User License Agreement | Vivaldi Browser

Read the end user license agreement for the Vivaldi browser and find out how to get in touch if you have any questions about regarding our EULA.

Vivaldi Browser
@HalleAndert This source code is incomplete and cannot produce a complete browser. Furthermore, this source code has a mixture of various licences, some of them are free, but others are non-free. Source availability does not equal to software freedom.
@rebel1725 Which browser do you recommend then?
@HalleAndert It depends on your needs. If you want security and privacy, LibreWolf and Mullvad are for you. If you want anonymity, Tor Browser is an ideal choice. If you want freedom, you may consider rebranded versions of Firefox such as Iceweasel and GNU IceCat. If you just want usability, go for Firefox or Chromium.

@rebel1725 Firefox and all its offshoots are not truly independent. They are heavily dependent on financial support from Google.

The only browser company I can fully trust based on its philosophy is VIVALDI Technologies, and I know many team members who used to work at Opera Software.

@HalleAndert If you wanna rather trust a fucking big brother who don't want to disclose their nasty source code and instead spying on you go use that fucking browser ahead 🙃
@HalleAndert Additionally, Opera, what they have mentioned, is proprietary too, and should be avoided.

@Tutanota

You are missing FreeTube

@Tutanota nice list! I'm already using some of those. I suggest Deepl for translation and "Le Chat" for Gemini (ai)!

@Tutanota never let people tell you they are user friendly though! It really annoys me when “Google alternatives” get promoted that are overcomplicated, ugly, and unusable for normal people.🤷

I honestly think many open-source developers don’t prioritise usability because they assume their products will always be fringe and non-commercial, so UX and onboarding are neglected. It becomes a badge-of-honour exercise to even get them working. 🛠️ 1)

@Tutanota I just tried Aurora Store. The homepage is full of Temu ads (ironically), there’s no clear download path, no proper instructions, and no obvious way to browse apps 📖.

If you want people to adopt alternatives, above all else they must be instantly easy to access, install, and use. Otherwise it’s Dungeons & Dragons level niche interest.🔚

@TheComfortableSpotPodcast @Tutanota that is SOOO important.

Sometimes it's only one click less that makes an app better.

Edit: I remember several times I tried to install new software on PC and needed 1-2 hours. That was depressing.
I need a happy path!

@fuchsi @Tutanota totally agree. Most people don’t choose Google because they love surveillance. They choose it because:
° It works
° It’s fast
° It’s consistent
° It’s one click

If alternatives require:
° Three websites
° Two APK installers
° One GitHub repo
° And a prayer
…they’re dead on arrival outside hobbyist circles.

@TheComfortableSpotPodcast @fuchsi @Tutanota
and even within hobbyist circles it gets more difficult because recruiting your non-tech savvy partner or family is near impossible. These projects aren't as fun alone.

@TheComfortableSpotPodcast @Tutanota

100% what Ken said

so much open source has not prioritised user experience, design.

and the tragedy is that the commercial options aren't super great - open source could really jump ahead.

@rzeta0 @Tutanota couldn't agree with you more. Aurora Store is a perfect example of this failure. My experience is sadly typical:
° Homepage cluttered with ads (ironically)
° No obvious download flow
° No clear explanation of what it is, how it works, or how to use it
° Multiple APK versions dumped in a folder with zero guidance

That’s not “freedom from Google.”
That’s DIY software archaeology.

@Tutanota Also instead of Google Photo: Piwigo. 🙂

@Tutanota openstreetmaps is soooo much better. I use mapy.cz as a frontend and it is soo much better for biking and tracking.

I didn't even know half of those browsers. Are the foxes all forked from Firefox?

@fuchsi Many browsers, including most with animal names, are Fireforks, yes. The Mozilla codebase is free for anyone to use, modify, and distribute, but some elements of the official Firefox are not. (Especially the name and logo.) Most forks seek to avoid aspects of FF considered undesirable, or provide absent features.

@Tutanota Suggestions :

Translations:
- Firefox supports downloading models and running locally (either to translate page or direct access in "about:translations")

Android: also list non Android derivatives:
- #SailfishOS <- I daily drive that
- postmarketOS
- UbuntuTouch
They all have (container-based) solutions to run Android apps if necessary (AppSupport, Waydroid)

Also, add fediverse:
- Pixelfed
- Peertube

@Tutanota

Android:
- in the near future, #SteamOS on ARM is going to be an alternative to Android for the specific niche of gaming, with their Lepton as their own take on the cointainer approach for Android app (or more specifically in this case: mobile games)

- currently, most retro consoles also support Linux, but the exact distro tend to be device specific (AnberELEC, RockNix, Batocera, RetroPie, etc.)

@Tutanota

Just to add that if you use KeepassXC it has a built in authenticator. ctrl-t, ctrl-v fill in the otp validation.

@Tutanota
The only Google service I can't kick is YouTube because I watch a lot of music and niche interest videos not available elsewhere. Shame PeerTube can't just mirror YouTube! As it is I use FreeTube to watch YT but Google keep messing with the API to stop it working on 3rd party apps. Most recently yesterday afternoon.
@pthane @Tutanota that's the cool thing with invidious and newpipe (and friends), recognising how much content is only available on youtube but not wanting to access the website directly. the constant breakage is definitely an issue though

@Tutanota
Yeah, could be, but to be honest, it costs a lot more than f.e. the all in one (mail, storage, photos) price 2,99/month that Apple charges.

I would be fine if that would be 5 or 6 euro, but it's really a lot more.

@Tutanota
And, more importantly the quality of alternative apps is currently not that good; e.g. compare the desktop app of Ente with Apple Photos; it's a huge difference.

@Tutanota hey tuta, can you give us a short roadmap to your cloud?

I already switched to tuta mail & calendar, now i want your cloud

@badger3 @Tutanota

Yeah would be dope, I am currently looking for an alternative to Gdrive/Photos too. Would be neat to minimize the amount of logins and different subscriptions to keep track of.

@morganil @badger3 We've got an early, internal alpha ready, so it should be only a few more months maximum. Stay tuned!

@Tutanota @badger3

That is great! Hope you guys can share more info about it soon!

@Tutanota
nice, thanks for the short update. can´t wait for it (and with my huge data of ~ 3gb - lol) 😀
@Tutanota
Never downloaded anything ever again from google since It wouldn't let me uninstall some program/app back when they started.
How did yall not know they were bad back then?
@Tutanota why is brave browser not mentioned?
@Tutanota for authenticator you should also add Ente Auth which is open source

@Tutanota, I appreciate the list as much as I do the comments. Both parts were informative.

Thank you for bringing up less known (imho) alternatives, such as Immich. I truly enjoyed their "Cursed Knowledge" section

@Tutanota not having ente auth listed is egregious tbh
@Tutanota for being fully open-source organic maps is fantastic!

@Tutanota

A good list! I'm still using Google maps with Android Auto (also Google) - is there any alternative to Android auto?

@Tutanota where is Delta Chat?

@Tutanota Al fin una infografía de alternativas a Google con verdaderas alternativas a Chrome.

Eso sí, la categoría de sustitutas de Google Chat podría mejorar, comenzando por quitar Signal. Delta Chat o Monocles Chat/XMPP quedan mucho mejor.

@Tutanota Can you please stop listing Proton Drive and not add Proton Mail? This list is not honest

@Tutanota

@Tutanota As usual you just forget about Informaniak. Their suite (email, cloud, office) is really good and their AI Euria work's surprisingly well

@Tutanota

@GrapheneOS Tuta is mentioning /e/ again.

@Tutanota ✅ in all categories. What's the next challenge? 😁
