Reading about #Nvidia CEO crying about people not liking #AI, though it was a good time to recover this historic piece of art from the Copyright wars of the start of the century. Cc'ing @pluralistic

@berniethewordsmith @pluralistic Oh gosh, that takes me back! I remember designing/stencilling my own T-shirt to join in…

@daveybot @berniethewordsmith @pluralistic
No photo, but I still have a one-off slogan tshirt from 1998 that I designed and transfer printed, with appropriate fonts:

ONLY
STUPID
BASTARDS
TRUST
Micros~1

It's a reference to anti-trust action, and the 'Micros~1' is about Long File Name support.

The overall slogan was borrowed from an older tshirt design, which said: "ONLY STUPID BASTARDS USE HEROIN".

@berniethewordsmith @pluralistic : It remind me of what I wrote 13 years ago: https://ploum.net/care-business-model/index.html

some things never change…

I don’t care about your business model

I don’t care about your business model par Ploum - Lionel Dricot.

@ploum @berniethewordsmith @pluralistic

I am of the opinion that Business and Model are the two most evil words in English.

Begin on their own, but combine them? You know someone's up to some stupid nonsense and they've just cast some kind of weird mind-control spell on legislators.

"You're doing something horrible."
"Yes, it's our Business Model"
"OH. Oh sorry for bringing you in. We thought you didn't know it was horrible. Now that we know it's DELIBERATE we're powerless to stop you."

@Longwing
As a product manager, I miss how these supposedly entrepreneurial innovators are not doing any business modelling at all. If users don't use your product, that is a you problem - and there probably is a solution if your willing to listen, learn and put in the work. Somewhere between Bitcoins and LLMs this seems to have been forgotten. We seem to be back in the age where users are expected to just accept bad design. Why though?

"Here's Piss flavored Soda!"

I do not want piss flavored soda.

"But ... we Made it, so we expect you to buy it."

I do not want piss flavored soda.

"Why do you not want piss flavored soda?"

Something about the piss flavor.

"But it's soda! Everyone likes soda!"

Blackberry flavored Italian Sodas, sure. But this is piss flavored soda and I do not want that.

"But we sort of Have to sell it to you or we're screwed!"

Not actually my fucking problem, brah.

@elfin @pluralistic LinkedIn post: "I read so many people calling the soda piss flavored. They are mistaken. It may *give* the impression that is piss *right now* because people are drinking it in the bathroom. What people needs to so instead is-"
@berniethewordsmith @pluralistic I used to a have t-shirt of that, sans text.

@berniethewordsmith @pluralistic me encantaría ver al CEO de Nvidia llorando por ese motivo en concreto! No tendrás un enlace por ahí, Bernie?

@berniethewordsmith @pluralistic remember the bit where owning a business is meant to be high risk and high rewards?

We absolutely should not be taking away the risk. Failing businesses because of lack of demand shows that the free market is working. Give the workers a safety net, but those who gamble usually have their own

(Businesses that fail because someone else is anticompetitive is not ok.)

@craignicol I’m of the opinion everyone should get a safety net (including millionaires and people who have never worked in their lives), but a safety net shouldn’t include keeping your four houses with a swimming pool and a yacht. In fact, it shouldn’t include even one house, with or without swimming pool. It should include a home, however.
@ahltorp I agree. That's why they still get food to eat and shelter, just like everyone else should. Means testing necessities is abhorrent. Everyone should get the basics without any admin.
@berniethewordsmith @pluralistic

I remember over a decade ago, on the official forum for a certain tabletop RPG, someone started a thread to say they were cancelling their subscription because they were not interested in an upcoming product.
Two executives from that company, including one of the co-owners, replied to say that the OP should buy the product he was not interested in, so that he could help them stay in business so they could potentially make something he might be interested in in the future.
@berniethewordsmith @pluralistic The sooner they realise, the sooner we can have graphics cards for our 'puters
