I have now discovered multiple times that some song in my Spotify discovery Playlist is AI generated. Signs:
- generic song & album art
- all music released since 2025
- no real artist bio

@Techaltar The Icelandic equivalent of GEMA communicated years ago that most of those were being published by labels owned by companies and individuals that were large shareholders in Spotify.
@alda @Techaltar Do you think that's the reason Spotify allow it? I'm kind of puzzled about what other reasons they have to allow it? It's not like the world is short of music.

@Deckard1 @Techaltar STEF did their media campaign based on how some of the fake AI artists were imitating and ripping off specific Icelandic artists.

So maybe the whole story has to do with optimising the suggestion algos to keep some artists below a certain payout bracket?

@alda @Deckard1 @Techaltar I think it's to do with how Spotify distributes the payments. If they can pay a bunch to themselves, they can pay the artists less. I bet Cory Doctorow (@pluralistic) wrote something insightflul about it.
@Techaltar 22 albums released in 2025 might be a hint... We should really have laws that require platform to indicate when something is AI generated.
@peaulax didn't we have this law in the eu since around 2018 where we take the platform responsible for the content uploaded on it I think that would complement each other quite well
@Techaltar just don't use Spotify. Please!
@DoomHammerNG every platform is full of this shit
deezer automatically detects AI songs, clearly marks them as AI on the album page, and removes them from all algorithmic recommendations and their human made playlists.
and I think qobuz is probably also handling AI music well. they pay artists the best out of any streaming services and give the option to buy albums like you would on bandcamp
@tenc1235 Oh? Do you have a source for this?
Deezer launches world’s first AI tagging system for music streaming

All albums on Deezer with AI generated tracks are now clearly tagged to give music fans full transparency.

@Techaltar which other platforms are full of it? I've never seen anything like that.

@Techaltar That's because #Spotify is a cyst on the behind of humanity.

Try Qobuz, or literally any other streaming service, please.

@gavin57 @Techaltar well, not literally, YouTube Music also has AI. THEY ARE EVERYWHERE. But I am human, after all. Like Daft Punk.
@Mai9 @Techaltar Strangely, AI is the least of its issues. The bigger one is that its CEO is an awful person and the service has stopped paying most artists anything at all.

@Techaltar I'd like to add the following signs:
• A new album with 10+ songs released every month or so
• No social media

Frustrating: even if you can ignore that fact, you can't simply continue to enjoy a newly discovered "artist", as typically every song is also wastly different (e.g. female/male/group vocals, who cares?).

I encountered this first last summer, shocked this was a thing. I wanted to report this to Spotify, but quickly learned that they are actively encouraging this 🥀

“Self-hosted Spotify”. I use the Music app in my Nextcloud and compatible play:sub app on iPhone. I know it’s not the same, especially since you’re looking for automated recommendations. But perhaps still a refuge from AI generated content, if you already have CDs or mp3s or are willing to buy them once you’ve been inspired by new music on the streaming services. 🙌

@Techaltar This is why one should discover and listen to music with purpose and not just leave it to some soulless platform and algorithm.

Okay so nowadays it's a bit harder to find a record store and go browse like we used to, but try bandcamp. Or internet radio.

@Techaltar Yesterday, I also found out that a song in my suggested songs was AI-generated when I looked at the cover and then went to the artist’s page. The song is kinda nice?! 😅

@Techaltar Same, and, I appear to be subjected to AI slop religious worship music for a religion I'm not part of.
@Techaltar all the songs in the "lofi beats" playlist are from artists who debuted in 2024 and have since released one single every 2 weeks with a ghibli-style album cover

@Techaltar I discovered some at YouTube Music as well.

I liked this one.

@Techaltar how can you with the name TechAltar hate it when AI comes and makes music? I like tech, TechAltar, an also AI making music.
