The Samsung Family Hub Smart Fridge wins the CES Worst in Show award for Repairability!
@iFixit finally! some fix to my 12yo kid to stop eating out my precious swiss cheese. Thanks for this tip.
@iFixit Has already someone posted the obligatory video link for this ...eh... feature? Anyway, here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMS2VnDveP8

@lilo
I reaaaally need to post that on slack on Monday.
@iFixit
@iFixit Yeah, more e-waste.
@iFixit And what fun toddlers will have learning their vocal powers
@ecoscore @iFixit Watch said toddler throw a tantrum in someone else's house because their fridge doesn't respond to "open sesame".
@iFixit if you lived with a parrot or even a very cunning budgie, that would be opened more than shut.
Squaaaaaaark OPEN!
@LuluHelle 😂 😂 🐦‍🔥
@iFixit I used to work at an electronics shop where we sold these. We had a display model of the first generation where the touchscreen was laggy and slow. A fridge is supposed to last 20 years, why would you equip it with a tablet, when said tablet won’t be able to update in less than 3?
@SimonCHulse Exactly! Bring back things being built to last🛠️

@iFixit We had a fridge where the handle was broken. I used to put it back into place and ignore it, gripping the door itself by the edge to pull it open.

It was great with guests around, they'd grab the (broken) handle and pull it off the fridge with a shocked look.

To this day, I still use this method to open other fridges with perfectly functional handles.

@iFixit so even if it doesn't break, a power outage locks me out? in a natural disaster, you won't be able to fill a cooler with your frozen shit and flee?

still better than being trapped in a burning Tesla, I don't understand why everyone seems to hate handles now.

@iFixit I have a 20-year-old Samsung dumb fridge which still works fine! No touch screen. No ice maker, just ice cube trays that have to be filled manually.

I guess the Samsung executives hadn't yet caught the enshittification train back then.

@iFixit I cannot get over how *slowly* the door opens/closes.

this is literally useless in a kitchen. this is a fridge for someone who has never actually had to use a fridge themselves while cooking.

@rysiek @iFixit had the same thought. when i do kitchen stuff, i am tearing the door open with a speed that i stop aging for a short time - multiple times.
@iFixit I'm guessing only because Apple didn't make one themselves. 🙄
@iFixit I bought a fridge this year, I'm never buying one with a screen.
@iFixit
Actually anyone buying a device named
Samsung Family Hub Smart Fridge
qualifies for being killed by a hacked home device sooner or later.
@blausand @iFixit new ssid name for my wifi

@iFixit You kiddin me? Why on earth would I PAY for a fridge w/ a screen and voice control? A microphone in the kitchen. Next they offer you gesture control, too - to add a camera.

I see. Make the customer pay for

- the equipment to wiretap them
- a screen to play them adverts
- the power consumption of wiretap equipment and advertising

Oopsie, that's almost the security profile of a smartphone - but THIS IS A FRIGGIN' FRIDGE!

In exchange, save on a handle that would allow to access the contraption w/o electrical power in case of a power outage emergency.

@dazzr @iFixit

The worst thing is, to build this you have to build a thing that’s actually useful and then not ship it.

I would pay more for a fridge that detected that the door had been open for more than a minute and shut it. I’ve pushed my fridge (and freezer) door nearly closed and left it open a bit several times. If you build the motorised door, it’s trivial to have a feature where it notices this and closes the door, and maybe a control for the very few times when I want to leave the door open (e.g. when I’m taking everything out and cleaning it).

This doesn’t require ‘AI’ or a touchscreen.

@david_chisnall @iFixit Full ACK! A fridge NEEDS AI as much as a bicycle or a toilet brush. KISS principle, please.

This is all about mechanical issues, and some electrical if we tried to accommodate David's suggestion.

@iFixit

die Verkrempelung der Welt, noch ein schönes Beispiel von der CES...

@gabrielberlin

@iFixit another case of “just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.”
@iFixit Are you using Samsung's reputation to judge its Repairability before the fridge properly enters the market?
@DaMu @iFixit just look at it, do you think home depot will sell the screen or brains for you to even open the damn thing?
@shironeko @iFixit True. Last I checked, Home Depot / Lowes / Best Buy don't sell brains or screens.
@DaMu @iFixit they do sell regular fridge parts though

@iFixit

How many days of use until the owner realises they sound like a twat every time they want to use the fridge?

@iFixit
I don't want to talk to lifeless devices in the first place. Also that door moves too fucking slow and so lets too much cold air out.
@Starkimarm @iFixit I will never understand the mind of someone who finds voice interfaces preferable when hands are available.
