@iFixit We had a fridge where the handle was broken. I used to put it back into place and ignore it, gripping the door itself by the edge to pull it open.
It was great with guests around, they'd grab the (broken) handle and pull it off the fridge with a shocked look.
To this day, I still use this method to open other fridges with perfectly functional handles.
@iFixit so even if it doesn't break, a power outage locks me out? in a natural disaster, you won't be able to fill a cooler with your frozen shit and flee?
still better than being trapped in a burning Tesla, I don't understand why everyone seems to hate handles now.
@iFixit I have a 20-year-old Samsung dumb fridge which still works fine! No touch screen. No ice maker, just ice cube trays that have to be filled manually.
I guess the Samsung executives hadn't yet caught the enshittification train back then.
@iFixit I cannot get over how *slowly* the door opens/closes.
this is literally useless in a kitchen. this is a fridge for someone who has never actually had to use a fridge themselves while cooking.
@iFixit You kiddin me? Why on earth would I PAY for a fridge w/ a screen and voice control? A microphone in the kitchen. Next they offer you gesture control, too - to add a camera.
I see. Make the customer pay for
- the equipment to wiretap them
- a screen to play them adverts
- the power consumption of wiretap equipment and advertising
Oopsie, that's almost the security profile of a smartphone - but THIS IS A FRIGGIN' FRIDGE!
In exchange, save on a handle that would allow to access the contraption w/o electrical power in case of a power outage emergency.
The worst thing is, to build this you have to build a thing that’s actually useful and then not ship it.
I would pay more for a fridge that detected that the door had been open for more than a minute and shut it. I’ve pushed my fridge (and freezer) door nearly closed and left it open a bit several times. If you build the motorised door, it’s trivial to have a feature where it notices this and closes the door, and maybe a control for the very few times when I want to leave the door open (e.g. when I’m taking everything out and cleaning it).
This doesn’t require ‘AI’ or a touchscreen.
@david_chisnall @iFixit Full ACK! A fridge NEEDS AI as much as a bicycle or a toilet brush. KISS principle, please.
This is all about mechanical issues, and some electrical if we tried to accommodate David's suggestion.
How many days of use until the owner realises they sound like a twat every time they want to use the fridge?
