Ten years ago, if someone had told me that tech policy bloggers would be calling for ICE to be abolished, I would have thought it very unlikely.

"Abolish ICE" is an increasingly mainstream and extremely correct position.

Abolish ICE Before They Kill Again, Impeach Trump & Noem Before They Incite More Murder

Renee Nicole Good was a 37-year-old award-winning poet, a mother of a six-year-old, and a wife who had recently moved to Minneapolis. That all ended yesterday when a masked ICE agent murdered her i…

10 years ago at Trump 1.0 protests was the first time I saw the "Abolish ICE" slogan on signs. I didn't understand, so I read an immigration attorney's blog and the subject and thought, "Oh, okay, that makes sense. Abolish ICE." I was not what you'd call a leftist, just vehemently anti-Trump in general. But yes, it definitely wasn't a mainstream opinion back then.

It sure is now! Besides this, at protests we get all kinds of education about pre-existing problems with ICE.

@evacide

Abolish the organisation.

Jail all of them for murder. With the masks, you don't know which of them did it.

Jail the "president" who controls this murderous gang.

@evacide Abolish ICE is too wishy-washy. I would much prefer to see calls to *prosecute* ICE.

@bob_zim
@evacide

Professional Cadillac liberal Tim Walz threw that option away at his press conference.

There is no criminal immunity for immigration enforcement. They have to follow state criminal law. A former federal running mate chose to not run again then chose to capitulate when he had to do his job. What were you expecting from him?

@bob_zim @evacide that would rely on the police, which also needs to be abolished.
@evacide fr. I saw the headline and I was like, ok, what no-name substack is this.... :|
@evacide They are like the IDF using the same techniques;, must be abolished and prosecuted.
@evacide Read some post on FB making fun of this #murder. And they got likes....USA, you got a problem. A mother got killed by US gestapo and some ugly americans support it. Including the MAGA goverment. Everything is so wrong. R.I.P

@Jonasdahl

In 1933, the public majorly supported what the NSDAP was doing, removing Jews from the civil service and politics.

By 1938, public support continued as the Gestapo went door to door hunting Jews, homosexuals, and others who opposed them.

By 1939 the American Nazi Party had their night at Madison Square Garden, promoting Christian Nationalism and of course other Nazi ideology. Under, of course, “pro-America” guise.

So, yes. I can believe Americans support this.

@evacide

@evacide Even a simple upgrade to making Behavioral Science core education, seems further and further from reach.
@evacide I prefer #AbolishDHS but #AbolishICE is an acceptable short-term compromise.

@evacide Techdirt's been a consistent critic of ICE, though during the Obama years they focused more on ICE's abuse of copyright enforcement than its abuse of people with brown skin.

Tim Cushing's their main guy covering abusive behavior by law enforcement; here's the first Trump-era post I can find about ICE abusing immigrants, from May 2017:

https://www.techdirt.com/2017/05/23/ice-using-stingrays-to-track-down-immigrants-because-course-it-is/

First example I can find of them using the phrase "abolish ICE" is from 2024, but I think the sentiment was always there.

ICE Using Stingrays To Track Down Immigrants Because Of Course It Is

As information about police use of cell tower spoofers began leaking out, those who had kept the public (including defendants, judges, and even some prosecutors) out of the loop began defending the…

@Thad I am talking very specifically about "abolish ICE" here.
@evacide not only abolish, But ALL members of ICE should go immediately to trial.

@evacide tech dirt is certainly special. They spelt it out didn’t they that they were a political blog now that one time long ago.

Why Techdirt Is Now A Democracy Blog (Whether We Like It Or Not)

While political reporters are still doing their view-from-nowhere “Democrats say this, Republicans say that” dance, tech and legal journalists have been watching an unfortunately recogn…

@OliviaVespera To be clear, I am now and have always been a Mike Masnick fangirl. I am very impressed with the way that Techdirt has stepped up to meet this moment, especially when so many mainstream publications have not.
Man, woman shot by federal agent in Portland during 'targeted' vehicle stop: Officials

The agent is involved with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, DHS said.

ABC News
@evacide I remember reading a lot of news about Google employees' internal protests against contracts with ICE and DHS, I think, 10+ years ago, deeply surprised that such talented and lucky software people escalate such seemingly nuanced issues out of their professional lane (as perceived by foreigner).
@autkin ICE and DHS rely on tools built by the tech industry, an industry where immigrants are a significant and essential part of the labor force. This is very much in their lane.
@evacide sure, I mean it was my immature perspective back then
@autkin I appreciate the clarification.
@evacide I'm also partial to the musical techs doing anarchism:

Don't let ICE track you.

YouTube
@evacide they need to name each and every one of them on a public stage while stripping them of duty and patches!.

@evacide
Damn. The TechLibs are radicalizing. Love to see it. 😢

I hope folks learned their lesson from 2020 and get the job done this time. No more black squares. I wanna see ICE agents DOGEd, live on air.

@evacide

Abolish the republican party and jail them for the TREASON they DID and are still COMMITTING! Treason comes with the death penalty! Society doesn't want these types of criminals walking the streets.
Jail all the billionaire puppet-masters also, abolish bribes for congress along with a slew of other reforms needed for a long time now.

@evacide

"Abolish ICE before they kill again" is a very powerful statement, because it's factual and simple and shocking.

@evacide I'm so disappointed with what is happening in this country
