“Health” Secy #RFKJr will be announcing the measures in a press conference scheduled for 11AM at #HHS HQ. #DrOz, who leads the Centers for #Medicare & #Medicaid, Dr. Marty Makary, of the #FDA, & Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, of the #NIH, will all be at the presser.

In October, NPR exclusively reported on 2 new proposed rules for hospitals that #DrOz is expected to announce Thursday. The first would prohibit #doctors & #hospitals from receiving federal #Medicaid reimbursement for #medical care provided to #transgender patients younger than age 18. The second would block all Medicaid & #Medicare funding for ANY services at hospitals that provide pediatric #GenderAffirmingCare.

#Medicaid provides #healthcare coverage to #LowIncome children & adults in the US #Medicare is the #health program for Americans over 65 [#seniors] & #disabled people. Virtually every #hospital in the country takes Medicare & relies on it, so the rule would have a wide-ranging effect.

The pivot to the topic of transgender minors comes one day after #Republicans in the #House of Representatives passed a package of #health care bills that do not extend subsidies for people who buy #HealthInsurance in #AffordableCareAct plans.

The legislative package included a bill, introduced by Rep #MarjorieTaylorGreen (R-GA) that makes it a #crime to provide #GenderAffirmingCare to #transgender minors, punishable by a fine or #prison time of up to 10 years. It passed on Wednesday.

Another bill, introduced by Rep #DanCrenshaw (R-TX) would prohibit #Medicaid reimbursement for gender-affirming care for youth. It is scheduled for a vote Thursday. Both bills would also have to pass the #Senate to become #law.

Supporters & opponents of #transgender rights agree that, taken together, the forthcoming #hospital rules will make access to pediatric #GenderAffirmingCare across the country extremely difficult, if not impossible. The care is already banned in 27 #states. The proposed rules will start a comment period after they are entered into the Federal Register; they will not take effect immediately.

A coalition of 19 #states Tues sued to block the #Trump admin’s plan to strip #federal #funding from #hospitals providing gender-related care for minors, a policy that would effectively shut down any #health care providers that failed to comply.

That plan, announced Thurs by “Health” Secy #RFKJr, would cut off all #Medicaid & #Medicare payments — which make up a major share of #hospital revenue — to any facility that provides minors with gender-related treatments in the country.

Part of the underpinning of that plan is an unironic declaration by #RFKJr that gender-related treatments for minors “fail to meet professional recognized standards of health care.” In the suit, the states argue that the declaration is unlawful & a government overreach.

@Nonilex Can someone explain why the far right has got such a bee in its bonnet over the trans issue? Surely it’s nothing more than a form of malformation which, if possible, can be remedied. People in this situation require support not persecution from those who have no idea what they are talking about, or am I being naïve? Why is this even a political issue? #TransRights #humanrights

@alex_p_roe @Nonilex I think there are a few reasons:

1) There aren't many of us, so we're not an effective political bloc and people are less likely to know us personally.
2) We show that long-standing assumptions about sex and gender aren't true, and people are instinctively defensive when their assumptions are challenged.
3) Changing people's minds requires more than just an infodump, which is time consuming.
4) It's easer to make up lies than it is to correct them.
5) Anything relating to sex and gender makes quite a lot of people feel slightly uncomfortable to begin with.

Probably other reasons too, but those are the ones that spring to mind.

That people in your situation are being targeted is cruel and unnecessary, but sadly, the far right does see to be all about cruelty and hate despite many claiming to be “Christian”. I know the numbers are tiny which is yet another reason to call for this persecution to end now. I wish other politicians would stand up and say something before (more) people start dying. Here’s to the world becoming more humane…eventually 🙂

A manufactured scapegoat, upon whom all troubles get blamed, is key to triggering support for authoritarianism. The parallels to what happened to my grandparents in Germany are extremely obvious.

Unfortunately, there are sections of the Bible which are open to abuse except they are often countered by other sections which the US (and not only) far right, conveniently ignore. But the Bible encourages the spread of love not hate. The far right spreads hate which is not Christian!
