A lot of people in the comment section for Firefox mentioned a new browser currently under development called Ladybird. I checked its repository, and it says: 'Ladybird is in a pre-alpha state and only suitable for use by developers.'

PS: I don't know much about the devs or team behind it but they already seems to have a big sponsors like Cloudflare https://ladybird.org/

@nixCraft yeah no thx, Ladybird team is not nice to ppl like me
@nixCraft Unfortunately the lead dev is very regressive which has been documented and is driving people away from the project

Ladybird and the Controversy over Inclusivity

What people were upset about, why it blew up, and why some people are still leery of the project to this day.

@Eliot_L @nixCraft in summary: Someone created a pull request to make some wording more gender neutral and someone denied that PR calling it “personal politics.”
@duco @nixCraft There's more than that, receipts if you read the whole article I posted. It seems he's also a Charlie Kirk and DHH stan. Also I don't see a request to not assume the person reading the docs is male is political, but he seems to think so.
@Eliot_L oh, okay, I missed the update section. So apparently Kling doesn't think that Charlie Kirk was a Nazi and celebrates Kirk for peaceful discussions, which would maybe have been a fair point, if Kirk wouldn't have died by the violence promoted by himself. And if someone else besides me wonders what "stan" means, it's "overly obsessed fan" according to the urban dictionary. I don't see the obsession, but it's save to say, that Andreas Kling is on the political right wing.
@duco @Eliot_L I dont understand the modern apparent concept of it not being possible to respect someone despite disagreeing with someone about something. FOSS will forever become properly mainstream if folks cant work around these things. I’m not saying some of these topics arent sensitive but imo labelling Ladybird as a fascist project is short sighted.
@ahpadt @duco I didn't say the project was fascist but maybe it is. However I believe someone who thinks being inclusive of women and nonbinary folks is "political" is going to foster a toxic environment that is ultimately hostile to those folks. So I can't in good conscience be a cheerleader for projects like that unless those leaders either make amends with the community or are replaced.
@Eliot_L @duco If a software project chooses to not spend development efforts on DEI-esque topics, does not make it fascist.
@ahpadt @duco So in your mind it's acceptable for projects to willfully exclude women and nonbinary folks? I will never agree that's ok.

@ahpadt oh fuck off with the nazi apologea, you're either trolling or extremely ignorant and in either case you should shut the fuck up

@Eliot_L @duco

@Eliot_L @nixCraft thank you

That is a useful link

I do not know what to think now, I recognise the attitude. It is hard to work with people who view inclusive language as political activism.

Does not make them bad people necessarily , but it damages their work IMO

@worik it goes beyond just this initial PR rejection and "neutrality policy"

@sow @nixCraft (it's not just inclusivity, check also the updates at the end)

support Servo instead

@nixCraft I personally think Servo is a better project to look forward to, it doesn't have weird people behind it like Ladybird does: https://servo.org/

It would be funny if the project took off and replaced Firefox since it was initially started as an engine replacement for Firefox but abandoned by Mozilla after a while.

Servo aims to empower developers with a lightweight, high-performance alternative for embedding web technologies in applications.

Servo is a web rendering engine written in Rust, with WebGL and WebGPU support, and adaptable to desktop, mobile, and embedded applications.

Servo
@Lenni @nixCraft sadly servo is million miles away from usability.
@janantos @nixCraft Ladybird also is from what I know. I've messed around with Servo's latest tagged releases and they actually worked for many websites, with some rendering issues, bugs and broken websites here and there, but overall it was really good considering how long it has been almost competely dead.

@nixCraft Yep, it's too soon for now, but a great news that a new web engine (not only a browser) is to come 👍

We need more of them!

@nixCraft

I don't know much about the devs or team behind it

Maybe you should spend 2 minutes of your time to look into them, before you endorse a right wing project 🤦

@pixel you are acting like being right wing is a sin, yet it's just the political view opposite yours. It's a web browser btw, not a political campaign. In this context @nixCraft does not have to do a background check just to make a post

@[email protected] @nixCraft It defines a specific spectrum of political views (especially today), and not just the opposite of someones opinion.

And yes, many of those views are usually considered a sin.

So, I guess the same comment counts for you as well.
You might wanna inform yourself about what you are endorsing.

@UBERCHAD @pixel @nixCraft yeah and white supremacists are "just asking questions" about brown people

fuck off

@outfrost what are you even talking about? This is a thread about a browser
@nixCraft do you understand the choice to work with swift? We already have issues with WebKit being so closely tied to Apple. I’d like to be excited about the project
@nixCraft yup, same as Servo: both does have their own web engine and JS engine made from ground 0
@nixCraft a browser from scratch would be a headache to use. No chromium or firefox base means so many websites would trip up and extensions would need to be ported over or copied. The founder could be saint and I still would't care
@nixCraft I watch the Ladybird-Browser-Updates sometimes on YouTube. https://youtu.be/VqzbqsIlaNI They show some stats and show the state of the browser with some supporter's websites. It's interesting to follow, but it's still a long way and the stats don't show the whole picture. They don't show the performance, for example.

Cloudflare bankrolls fascists

@nixCraft I thought Ladybird was a dead project as of 2024 with no more updates coming for it.

@nixCraft Highly recommend @peersky and @agregore if you’re looking for browsers built on cool, already-available tech that prioritize user agency.

@nixCraft Great project. I hope it succeeds! 🫶
@nixCraft just a reminder, we would like you to do better and not promote a project run by white supremacists and queerphobes
