Have you seen the new browser to replace Firefox? It's called IceCat. It's literally called Zen. It's a customized Librewolf install. It's a gecko fork called Pale Moon. You can probably use SeaMonkey. It's called K-Meleon. We're all using Floorp. Install Floorp right now. We're all using Floorp. Install Floorp right now. Everyone is using Floorp now. Install Floorp right now.
@lusrangifer That's it. I'm done with your graphical browsers. I'm using links on an amber phosphor terminal from here on out.
@LightTheUnicorn At least that’s not a fork of Chrome!
@LightTheUnicorn @lusrangifer I had the same thought, though I went with "text-based browser" rather than Fallout New Vegas (I always changed the terminals to amber)
@LightTheUnicorn @lusrangifer You made me try Links. I thought it was just like... shitty Lynx but the replacement of the command bar with the pop-up box looks pretty cool.

@doraii @LightTheUnicorn @lusrangifer There's also elinks and w3m, and I can never decide which one is best.

(Not that I use them much, but I do test that my websites work with them.)

@LightTheUnicorn @lusrangifer Oh, good idea. I am trying this! I switched VSCodium to amber as well.
@lusrangifer That one person: Just use <Chrome>.
@flesh @darkwiiplayer @lusrangifer because she's my friend and I thought it was funny?
@KaitlynEthylia you call me a friend, yet you insult my very existence every day by using <firefox>.
(see replied-to message)
@lusrangifer This is literally half my feed.
@adhdeanasl @lusrangifer I've only seen librewolf so far.

@lusrangifer

To date, every time I've heard of Floorp I assumed it was gibberish. But you insisted. So I checked. And now I can't participate in my meetings because I'm cackling. I hope you're proud of yourself.

@amras @lusrangifer Your comment was the first inkling I had that it actually was a real thing.

@Tapewolf

I was sure that it was either going to be fake or some techbro scam. But no, it just looks like a midsized open source community out of Japan with a sense of humor.

Sometimes the world is ok.

@lusrangifer the only one that has lasted is librewolf. and that one’s extremely annoying to use for anything other than porn :I

@lusrangifer

[2 days later]: "We regret to inform you that Floorp is built by fascists"

@pikesley They’ve actually been going since 2021, and personally they don’t really stand out to me, but they seem fine.

@duckwhistle @lusrangifer @pikesley Honestly having looked at the site I'm still not 100% confident it's not a joke...

@speculationfictive @duckwhistle @lusrangifer @pikesley

I was thinking it's either about pee on the floor, or it's something a mattress does.

https://hitchhikers.fandom.com/wiki/Mattresses

Mattresses

Mattresses are friendly, dim-witted, docile creatures capable of speech. They are all called Zem and live in the swamps of Sqornshellous Zeta. Many of them are slaughtered, dried out, and shipped around the galaxy to be slept on by grateful customers, though they do not appear to mind this, one noting that since they are all called Zem they never know which of them have been killed anyway so their concern and grief - "globbering" - is kept to a minimum. No one really knows what mattresses...

@duckwhistle @lusrangifer @pikesley

Joke's on you, I used floorp for the past couple years until very recently!

@Dio9sys @duckwhistle @lusrangifer have we just lathed this into existence?
@duckwhistle @lusrangifer @pikesley
🔘 i was aware of floorp but it occupies the same part of the brain as poob does so i thought it was a joke

@duckwhistle @lusrangifer @pikesley TCF Consent Box on the first screen, where they could comply with the GDPR by not engaging in advertofascist tracking at all in the first place.

<Plonk>

@duckwhistle @lusrangifer @pikesley If @thelinuxEXP hadn't talked about Floorp a few months back on a video discussing Firefox alternatives, I would have assumed it was a joke!
Instructions unclear, installed Netscape Navigator
@lusrangifer I've been using a browser called Web, then discovered it's actually Gnome Web, then discovered it's actually Epiphany
@kirch When you realized it actually had a different name the whole time, that must have been an… epiphany.
@lusrangifer So far I've only really seen like 3 posts today about Librewolf and that's it?
@Umbreon I saw Floorp recommendations making the rounds on Bluesky yesterday, which was what brought on this shitpost.
@lusrangifer I don't like this one setting in Floorp so here's this hard fork called Proolf, which I'll release once per year and always be at least 3 months behind the most recent upstream release, which itself is three months behind its upstream…

@lusrangifer Pfft x3

Unironically I'm actually curious about what different ones bring to the table. So far only one has actually been unique, and I wanna play with it more to see if I vibe with it enough to stick or bounce off anyway.

@lusrangifer
Had to search Floorp to see how much of a joke this post was.
@jaykass @lusrangifer I did too. It is appears Floorp is an actual thing. Am now going to put all my computers into the trash bin and get out my banjo.
@lusrangifer are any of these in the Debian repos? Says he. Non ironically.

@freshstart In my Debian based MX-Linux, without going out of the default repos:

IceCat: No
Zen: No
Librewolf: No
Pale Moon: Yes (33.9.1)
SeaMonkey: Yes (2.53.22)
K-Meleon: No
Floorp: No

Of course, all of them are easily installable, I think. I'm just answering the question above.

@lusrangifer

@lusrangifer this is so great. boosted it on bsky lol
@lusrangifer Well, I can only say use a Web browser that you like using. As for what web browser to use, I guess that's a leap of faith, try them out and see what sticks.
@Shredd_Tone @lusrangifer For better or worse, I use Safari with a bunch of extensions. I know, I know. Closed source, Apple ecosystem and all that. 🤷🏻‍♂️

@cb @lusrangifer Is not now possible to use say a 3rd party app store to uses software that aren't governed by Apple?

My memory is a little foggy but I recall that being a thing.

@cb @Shredd_Tone @lusrangifer safari is totally open source actually (WebKit is its open name but it's pretty much the same)
@liaizon @cb @lusrangifer Shit, really! So just to clarify, can Safari (or Webkit) be modded or edited on Apple devices then?
@Shredd_Tone @cb @lusrangifer there are many WebKit forks across Mac, Linux and Windows even!

@lusrangifer

All aboard the Floorp!

@lusrangifer Everyone worries about this but basically it's the ideal scenario: choice and lots of different approaches.

The big fail is that these teams don't necessarily have a common backend project to cooperate on security and web standards, and that's entirely Mozilla's fault IMO

@lusrangifer I love how out of those Floorp sounds like the one that's definitely made up, but is actually the one I was going to try before getting entirely distracted again
@lusrangifer have you heard of our Lord and Savior #GNOME web /j
@lusrangifer screw floorp, i'm using emacs
@taq @lusrangifer
> post with a bunch of web browsers
“i’ll use an operating system instead”
those are entirely different things smh
@lizzie @lusrangifer @taq browsing the web by personally breaking into every server containing the website i want to visit, copying the contents to my laptop and viewing in plaintext
@apophis @lusrangifer @taq is it really plaintext if you look at it on your laptop screen? thats not seeing the text, thats looking at fonts. i pull out the hard drives and grab the needle and feel how it moves differently based on the tiny magnetic fields. solid state drives have been a challenge but i can still read them by waving a copper needle along the surface
