After decades of making fun about how some bank just bought a not-intended-by-nobel category, I'm kinda against that idea?

I mean… it's kinda okay, since those were always intended to PR-whitewash Nobel, so buying one for doing PR for "your" domain is kinda on-brand?

But why should anyone repeat that?

…and 1 million sounds ridiculously low?

@dat @bjoernsta @ecosia Well, making fun of it hasn't really worked, has it? Maybe it's easier to make up a new category than criticizing a category propped up by capitalists.

I think the Nobel Prize is not prestigious because some rich guy made up a bunch of categories to donate his ill-gotten gains to and everyone decided that he is eternally the arbitrator of what is worth for humanity. It's always been important because people, society, politicians, the media etc put value on it.

About the 1 million, that's a lot for ecosia I guess, but from the wording I assume it's not for a foundation to invest and take from the profits, but instead just for the first award. That's in line with the other Nobel prizes.

@dat @bjoernsta @ecosia Came here to say the same. Mathematics and computer science e.g. have their own prices without using the name of Alfred Nobel. To be honest they are way less well known and covered by media.
So it's just about 'stealing the brand Nobel'.

@thewhite969 Would also go against the whole point of the Nobel Prize (it is by definition, 5 prizes).

An actually realistic idea would be to pitch this to the Swedish Royal family to institute a completely _NEW_ prize.

Maybe call it the Victora prize.

@bjoernsta @ecosia ... i agree with the logic that climate change may lead to increased cause for war. And, therefore, relevant to a peace prize. However, i am a bit of a fatalist when it comes to the "tipping point" for effective change. i believe we are past that point. We may be able to delay the inevitable. But somewhere in the future things become really really bad. Current states of denial are an expected response. (e.g. Hide under the blanket and the monster isn't there)

@bjoernsta @ecosia I think it's an interesting proposal, but I can't imagine the Nobel committee will want to hunt for donations every year to sustain it. So, the prize would need to be backed by around €55 million in funds.
