#politiek #EU #VS #Rusland

@ErikJonker

#Krasnov and Putin... and they've been working on it for a long time.

Even here on Mastodon, I'm seeing a big increase in Russian propaganda, which has now evolved from lies about Ukraine invasion, to trying to break the EU. (I spend quite a lot of my time here, checking and reporting it.)

Horrible people, doing what horrible people do.

@Grant You're right, their propagandists have discovered the Fediverse too 😣

@Erik Jonker
@hans quite easy to block 😃

@hans And we are not giving them any room. #Reporting does help.

Also check the instance they are on. I have encountered several instances that were actually hosted in #Russia and spreading hateful #Russian war #propaganda. In that case report this to the admin of your instance and suggest to them to #defederate that instance.

@Frank Heijkamp I don't have to contact my admin, I am the admin 😏

It's very easy to block accounts or even entire servers, but the growing presence of accounts that spread desinformation, hate and propaganda is a sad side-effect of the Fediverse becoming more and more relevant.

@hans Perfect than you know all about it first hand. I am not an admin nor a moderator, me is only a regular user.

Most people don't realise that reporting does work. However I can imagine that incorrect reports or a high influx of reports might cause quite a bit of work? How are your experiences lately?

@Frank Heijkamp Well, I'm the only user on my instance, so I don't get a lot of reports 😂

But moderating an instance can be a lot of work. I did some moderation on mastodon.nl for a short time, and that taught me it's very time consuming.

Deciding what is or isn't acceptable, isn't usually easy. What one person takes as a gross insult, can be someone else's honest opinion. If your instance's policy values free speech and requires respect at the same time, it can be tough to arbitrate. Making an informed decision can easily take a lot more time than it took to write the disputed post...

Having my server all for myself makes it much, much easier: I don't have to defend or explain my decisions to anyone: full autonomy 😎

@hans To have your own instance does indeed sound like easy work.

I was already afraid to hear about the massive time consuming moderation on a larger instance with an open subscription. I can't imagine the labour that goes into it.

Ideally one is able to throw some form of automation at it that functions like a pre-filter and/or that is able to resolve 'simple' disputes automatically. The question is how many false positives and false negatives one is willing to accept? A difficult one.

@hans Running my own Mastodon server is on my wish list.
I didn't get time yet.
Two thin clients waiting to be installed for this, Jitsi, Home Monitor. Also a RasPi 3B on the shelf for it.
