Immigration Agents Have Often Grabbed and Mistreated Citizens, Congressional Investigators Find

Prompted by ProPublica’s reporting, an investigation by Senate Democrats documented the experiences of nearly two dozen citizens wrongly detained by immigration agents, contradicting the Trump administration’s claims that it only detains immigrants.

@ProPublica

I can understand that US citizens may be worried and especially angry over mistreatment of US citizens.

But in a way that itself IS exactly the problem. Some people putting themselves above others. Oh, it is a crime when it done to "our own", but yeah with others, yeah well, things happen, it maybe bad, BUT LOOK AT WHAT THEY DO TO US!

I know this is not the intended message, but reporting like this still shows the ingrained idea of US exceptionalism that even "the libs" have.

@ProPublica

To be fair this is not a uniquely USA problem. Plenty of people here in the Netherlands who show exactly the same attitude of incandescent rage for every infraction of their "birthrights". This "immigrant" should get behind in every line of natives waiting for something, these "others" should behave themselves impeccably or "go home" with some "help" if needed. They should just accept being housed on old ships and in containers. Justice for them is really an optional luxury.

@gvenema @ProPublica What Gerrit missed is that the U.S. citizens ICE is arresting may be the result of racial profiling: the problem may not be "some people putting themselves above others" but rather "some people putting some others below them."

@bzdev @ProPublica

It's clear the MAGA movement is very much about white supremacy. And I do understand that non MAGA citizens are upset about racial exclusion of other citizens.

However, looking from the outside, the much more pertinent point is, why people would be more upset about this, then about the entire concept of allowing kidnapping and torture for non citizens in the first place.

@gvenema @ProPublica People have been complaining about how non citizens are being treated as soon as people heard about it. Arrests of U.S. citizens is now in the news because Congress is starting to, or at least trying to, investigate. A lot more will probably come out once an investigation starts.

Goldman, Warren, Padilla, Kelly and Correa Demand Investigations into ICE's Detention of U.S. Citizens

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Dan Goldman (NY-10) and Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), along with Congressman Lou Correa (CA-46), Senator Alex Padilla (D-CA) and Senator Mark Kelly (D-AZ) today led 50 members of Congress in demanding immediate investigations into alarming reports that U.S. citizens are being wrongfully detained and deported by federal immigration agents under the Trump administration’s aggressive immigration enforcement policies. In a letter sent to the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) internal oversight offices, the lawmakers raised urgent concerns about a growing pattern of civil rights violations against U.S. citizens during immigration sweeps.

Congressman Daniel Goldman

@bzdev @ProPublica

But by focusing on "citizens" you are already moving the goalposts in a way that is pleasing to MAGA. After all, even if you defend citizenship rights, they can easily redefine who is a citizen and what constitutes proof of being a citizen even.

Looking from the outside again, it is an absurd restriction put on "investigation".

And really what needs to come out yet? The kidnappings, the concentration camps, torture and disappearings are already out in the open.

@gvenema @ProPublica Hey Gerrit, why don't you contact the congresspersons and senators mentioned in that article and tell them how to bring in non-citizens to testify about how they are being mistreated, given that ICE would probably nab any non-citizens if they showed up? It is simply easier, and safer for witnesses, to bring in U.S. citizens. You have to start somewhere to fix the problem, and it is not easy when half of the legislature is scared of Trump.
@gvenema @ProPublica We all think WE'RE different, but it seems all humans, given enough power, will abuse our fellow humans who are in a weaker position.
@ProPublica In other words: the sky is blue

@ProPublica Because of course they have.

Of course #KristiNoem is a #cunt #suckup #Nazi #vicious #liar

Of course #Trump and his #mush #brain are too #addled to even try to fix any of the cunt's #DHS #FuckUps
