Another long distance train trip, another advertisement for buying a car. Our train from Vienna to Budapest got cancelled, the next one is delayed by an hour (and counting). There goes my plan of going to bed early.

UPS tried to charge me $167 for importing my mask from the US I ordered from Joaquin Baldwin (I am not going to @ him as he doesn't need the mess). I self declared through the CLVS process and paid $44. UPS wanted to charge me the incorrect duties and the taxes to process the brokerage, plus the HST that was due on the shipment. That's a difference of over $120.

If you're in Canada, and you're stuck ordering goods that ship with UPS. USE THE CLVS PROCESS. UPS is screwing you.

It's simple. You call UPS IMMEDIATELY upon receiving the "you need to pay duties email" (or if you get them showing up at the door - ask the driver to hold for self declaration). Once you receive the paperwork, it's usually 24 hours later. Go to your nearest Port of Entry that is a designated commercial hub with CLVS services. There's several in Southern Ontario alone within easy reach of major cities. (Toronto, Hamilton, Fort Erie, Kitchener, Windsor just as an example)

Once there, present them your paperwork asking for a B15 form and to pay the duties and taxes owed. Wait for them to process it (it may take a little bit of time). Pay what you owe. A LOT LESS than what UPS wants.

Now you can sometimes take the B15 directly to the UPS depot, but not all of them are open to the public. So you can usually fax or email them (it'll be on the paperwork) and then they'll (re-)release it for shipment.

Make sure you have a copy on hand to give the driver in case they don't believe you. If you're picking up from a depot, make sure they copy the paperwork and GIVE YOU BACK THE ORIGINAL.

CBSA seems to rarely understand the (C)LVS process. Mostly because UPS blueballs people in to thinking that the only way to get your goods acroos the border is with their bullshit brokerage.

So here I sit in Fort Erie waiting for an agent to process the form so I can pay the taxes and duties then shove a red hot poker up UPS’ ass tomorrow when they deliver my package.

Both CBSA needs to be better trained on how to handle LVS declarations and people need to force their hand more often with UPS and tell them they can fuck off.

Surprisingly, most people are in easy reach of a Port of Entry is Southern Ontario, and can do it themselves relatively painlessly. You just gotta wait around for CBSA.
