A good while back, when I was in a really dark place, someone on Fedi paid me a nice compliment that made my day. I saved it.

I've been saving them ever sinceโ€”every time someone's compliment makes my day better.

I have hundreds now.

All these little snapshots of kindness.

I look at them when I'm feeling down and having intrusive thoughts sometimesโ€”they always make me feel better about the world, and about myself.

#Gratitude #KindnessIsPunkAF

Y'all should take a moment today to compliment someone (besides me ๐Ÿ˜‹).

And if someone gives you a complimentโ€”believe it!

You're all amazing people, and I won't entertain any replies to the contrary ๐Ÿ’

@alice
Believing compliments is just not how I'm built. Even giving them sometimes feels hard, but I do it anyway and it's getting easier. Thanks for the reminder

@alice
Funny thing: Together with other parents I'm doing a volunteer service for the local traffic police. Every morning at school days two of us are at an intersection as traffic guides. Originally we stop the traffic when school kids arrive at the intersection and let them cross the street, but since there are also elderly people in our village, we guide everyone across the intersection.

Anyway, last week I was doing my service when a bunch of school kids came up. In the winter months the mornings are quite dark in germany and visibility of pedestrians is always an issue. Before I stop the traffic I usually turn my head to the kids, say "Good morning!" And when they cross the street behind me I say "Have fun at school!". But in that particular group one of the girls had a new backpack. There were two tubes on it, running from the top down to the bottom along the left and the right corner of the backpack. And I'm not sure if there were diffused LEDs in there of if it was EL-wire, but they were glowing. Not in a bright, blinding way but bright enough to make her perfectly visible in the dark.

So when I turned around and say "Good morning!" to the group, I added "Hey, your backpack is very cool! I wish I had one of those when I was a school kid!". And she beamed back at me: "Yeah, I love it, too!". I stepped out into the traffic and said: "Here you go, have fun at school!"

Fuck, was that backpack cool!

@alice
You are the amazing person!

But ok, let speak about someone else: @h3mmy is a delightful person that is way too kind and patient with me

Also my buns (@Moondancer, @AstraCeleste, @ArtemisCeleste and Selena (can't mention zir account from this server ๐Ÿ˜ฟ)) are all lovely cuties ๐Ÿ’œ

@koalou

Awwww. Thanks love. Tu es trรจs mignonne aussi. Je t'aime, ma belle petite amie.

@alice @h3mmy @Moondancer @ArtemisCeleste

@AstraCeleste

(Not beautiful tho ๐Ÿ™ˆ)

@h3mmy @alice @ArtemisCeleste @Moondancer

@koalou

I respectfully disagree lol.

@h3mmy @alice @ArtemisCeleste @Moondancer

@AstraCeleste

Moi aussi! Tu es trรจs belle u//w//u

@h3mmy @koalou @alice @ArtemisCeleste

@Moondancer
No! รจ_รฉ
I can accept cute on good days but donโ€™t push it  (I need the version where the cat is biting the bun >_<)

@AstraCeleste @h3mmy @alice @ArtemisCeleste

@koalou

Wait so you're going to bite me if I call you beautiful?

...

I only have more incentive to call you beautiful now.

@AstraCeleste @h3mmy @alice @ArtemisCeleste

@Moondancer
Oooor, I could *stop* biting you when you do that. I wouldnโ€™t want to reward bad behaviour

@AstraCeleste @h3mmy @alice @ArtemisCeleste

@koalou

Awwwww. But your face is so pretty. And kissable~
๐Ÿฉต๐Ÿ’‹

@Moondancer @h3mmy @alice @ArtemisCeleste
@alice for a while, after getting really burnt out by the negativity and complaining one sees online, I had a habit of sending an email to the creator of something I liked every day to tell them how much I liked their work. Just a little way to encourage more positivity!
@alice ๐Ÿ’œโค๏ธ๐Ÿ’œ
@alice Lovely. Thanks for posting this. Made me happier.

@alice

I never had enough self-worth for compliments to even register. All my life I've argued against compliments when they were offered; it took me decades to recognize what I was doing and why. Eventually I started trying to force myself to fake appreciation and avoid hurting feelings - does that count as masking? - but internally I was still arguing and rejecting. I even do it with my wife. I don't know what substitute could lift my mood.

@alice I don't write to change other people's minds. I write to let other people know they are not alone.
@alice I like it here, too
@alice  you rock thanks for the American music post the other day it made my day.
@alice a kind word is a hand to hold in the dark

@alice @NanoRaptor
Everyone needs a complement now and then.

I always complement my nieces and great nieces whenever I see them.
I complemented the older ones boyfriend the other day and he was so happy: almost in tears.

His parents had never given him random complements!

@alice #lovesfedi ๐Ÿค— you are a beautiful soul Alice ๐Ÿชท thank you for writing

@alice you are one of the few people on the interwebs who I look forward to seeing posts from no matter what the topic. Keep being an awesome ambassador of what the fediverse can be!

I think I might want to learn how to pick locks now...

@alice

Itโ€™s so easy to focus on negative feedback & forget the compliments, & potentially very harmful. We all need to do this much more. Great reminder.

@alice I started doing this, too, when I was depressed in grad school. I stopped but perhaps I should start banking them up again just in case
@alice I love this post. Very well said, and saving compliments? That may be a thing I start to do too!! :) You're amazing alice and I'm so glad you're on mastodon!
@ActuallyAutistic @alice nobody compliments me. if i never logged in again idk if anybody would notice
@alice That's a very good self-care practice for a smart, clever and thoughtful person. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ ๐Ÿ‘
@alice Where do you put them?
@alice
Saving compliments! What a great idea. Now if I could just start getting them, maybe I could get out of this funk. Thanks for posting this.

@alice

am a fedi-noob , puts fbk and x to shame.
rock on,sister

@alice

Great idea!
I also should pick up my little book in which I wrote three positive things every day. I know that if I open it, all I see are positive, genuine things ๐Ÿ˜Š

@alice
You are a treasure, and your existence makes the world a better place
Ewen Bell ๐Ÿ“ธ (@[email protected])

Roughly two decades ago I came across the concept of "YayMe.txt". This fella described how he keeps a file on his computer, and everyday when something nice happens he'll open up that text file an...

@alice

great way to perk yourself up, Alice. Happy you found that treasure trove. Peace.

@alice
Darn it. Now I have to do it too. Because you are clearly a genius who leads by example.

You inspired me. Well done.

@alice I sure hope there's one of mine in that collection.

Because I catch myself almost every day scrolling past my timeline, looking specifically for your posts before I read the others. More often than not they're funny, insightful and just... nice.

And I'd like to give some of that back.

@alice
It is unfortunate that most of us are so quick to criticize and find fault, but so slow to praise. I try to remember to post positive comments.
@alice ok then, Iโ€™ll say that you looked really stunning in that white dress that you wore for that party last week. Iโ€™m envious.

@alice

I once had a Mgr.. long ago... She would send little cards with notes of gratitude or kudos.. and she would say something to the effect of 'keep this for later....when you might need to look at it again..."

She knew..

I did keep them. All of them... Still look at them from time to time.

In 40+ years of working in tech - she was the only one that did that.

So many BS, loudmouth, #narcissists #managers since.

#Courage #SelfEsteem #mentalhealth #decency #compassion

@alice Makes me think I should try to be nicer.
@alice I did something very similar earlier this year ๐Ÿ˜„. (https://shellsharks.com/kindness)
Kindness

All about the kindness of strangers.

@alice At some point during my last job I started saving emails with a 'Kudos' tag if they contained something positive like that.
