DEUTERONOMY 15:1: At the end of every seven years you must cancel all debts. This is how it is to be done: Every creditor shall cancel the loan he has made to his fellow Israelite. He shall not require payment from his fellow Israelite or brother, because the LORD's time for canceling debts has been proclaimed.

@Lana Aw, shucks. You caught them cherry-picking their Bible quotes again.

@Lana Nice thread. A bit of that of course is from The Torah (Judaism, applied with confusion to Christianity).

The Sermon on the Mount:

Matthew 6:24, Luke 16:13
No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

Matthew 19:24
And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

My favorite is Jesus telling his followers to stay out of government. Not just pay taxes (render unto Caesar) but stay out of politics.

@CassandraVert

Like some kind of separation of church and state?

No, more like good Christians should not want to be part of their own governance. It struck me as propaganda to benefit the government by keeping all the little people incurious and out of the way.
@CassandraVert I think it was about positioning the nascent church as being unthreatening to the Roman state. Don't throw us to the lions!

@Lana MAGA : We need to establish traditional Bible gender roles!

GALATIANS 3:28 : There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

@michaelgemar @Lana
What I've seen is that most Christians are perfectly willing to ignore the Old Testament unless we're talking about rules for women.

@Soozcat @Lana I agree β€” they seem rather embarrassed by the Old Testament, even though if they believe in the Trinity all the horrible genocide, slavery, and sexual assault done by Yahweh is also done by Jesus.

(That said, Galatians is in the New Testament.)

There’s a YouTube channel, Joel Reads Bible, where an atheist is reading the whole Bible verse by verse starting with Genesis. It’s pretty eye-opening how heinous much of it is:

Joel Reads Bible

I’m reading Bible so you don’t have to! πŸ™ƒ Are you tired of Christians and atheists cherry picking Bible to make it say whatever they want it to say? Are you tired of hearing "that's out of context"? Well, this is the channel for you! I'm reading Bible, every word, from the first page to the last page, in context! Is God going to reveal him/them/itself to me through the book or is it going to read like an incoherent myth? Only time will tell (11+ years if my calculations are correct)! Subscribe!

@michaelgemar @Lana There's nothing that kills belief in the Bible faster than reading the whole thing yourself.
@Soozcat @michaelgemar @Lana I read the whole thing years ago. I don't recall having had any surprises... the controversial bits are all very frequently discussed... And the rest is covered heavily in church... But there are a lot of boring parts...
@poleguy @Soozcat @Lana I was pretty shocked at how frequent and explicit the genocide is, how pro-slavery it is, and that if a priest’s daughter is sexually immoral he is supposed to burn her alive. (Also how much the Patriarchs are kinda jerks.) And I’m only in Joshua at this point.
@michaelgemar @Soozcat @Lana to be clear, I am not saying I think those types of passages are good examples of moral life. Only that I had already heard of them and wasn't surprised by the time I read them.

@poleguy @Soozcat @Lana I was raised Catholic, so the details of the Bible weren’t a priority when I grew up. πŸ™‚

And I certainly didn’t mean to suggest you thought those passages were models for morality. (No one should, of course, but as I’ve seen more and more hardcore β€œprofessional” religious apologists, I’ve been appalled at how many of them try to justify what seem like obvious atrocities.)

@michaelgemar @Soozcat @Lana I was raised/am Catholic too, but in my family we actually read the whole bible through. Throughout my life, my father would read it through and then start at the beginning again.

I also went to daily Mass for years. It's surprising how much of the bible is actually covered in the readings at daily+Sunday Mass over the two/three year cycle.

It's a bit light on old testament, but lots of that stuff is boring history of kings and wars. :-)

@michaelgemar @Soozcat @Lana

I don't know why I felt I should clarify that here. Ha!

Many people of non-religious background 'joke' that anyone who reads the bible believes that every book in the bible is written as prescriptive biblical moral rules to apply literally to modern life. I don't know many religious people that actually think that way, excepting of course the "hardcore professional religious apologists" who seem more set on being divisive politicians than christian evangelists.

@poleguy @Soozcat @Lana To be fair, most of the heinous stuff is in the Old Testament. That said, if one believes in the Trinity, all the terrible actions and laws from Yahweh are also from Jesus, and a New Covenant doesn’t change what was supposedly done in the past.

@poleguy @Soozcat @michaelgemar @Lana Most I heard was that some parts of the Bible are inappropriate for children. But not before getting a few books in.

Consequently, Leviticus had a rather interesting set of rules involving animal sacrifices, which didn't even get covered in a Catholic school. And then rules for (indentured) servants. It also felt like I wouldn't get any explanation in the school.

@arem @poleguy @Soozcat @Lana Leviticus has rules for *Israelite* indentured servants, but it also has very explicit rules for permanent chattel slavery of foreigners.

β€œAs for the male and female slaves whom you may have, it is from the nations around you that you may acquire male and female slaves. You may also acquire them from among the aliens residing with you and from their families who are with you who have been born in your land; they may be your property. You may keep them as a possession for your children after you, for them to inherit as property. These you may treat as slaves, but as for your fellow Israelites, no one shall rule over the other with harshness.” Leviticus 25:44-46

@Lana

pretty much all of Matthew is 'too woke' for christians and republicans

i saw a post from a pastor who read the beatitudes and was asked after the service where he got that 'woke stuff'

@Lana I’ve seen others doing this too recently. Love it! I propose a hashtag: #BibleButNotThatPart #MAGABible or #NatCBible
@Lana MAGA tries not to cherry-pick the bible: challenge level impossible
@Lana Their is no Sky Daddy. The Bible is a work of fiction. Tax ALL churches. Abortion is between a woman and her physician. Abortion is a topic requiring a vagina as a prerequisite to debate. All others should STFU. Just my humble opinions, of course. 😎
@Lana I just looked this up. It reads like β€œabortion is mandated if the woman had an affair”. Don't know, if you really want to teach this to MAGA people.
@Lana Eunuchs were some of the most powerful people in the ancient world. They had the ear of Queens and Kings. Many Kings would not permit men to interact with Queens, and women were not permitted to interact with the King, but eunuchs could do both, and often did, and those people listened to them.
@Lana I get the point you're trying to make but I'd rather be called a slur than a eunuch

@julia
If I imagine myself growing up in biblical times, i could see myself become an eunuch in puberty while current me still hasn't really figured out what to do about my gender at age 30.

And i wouldn't have "trans" ... as a concept to understand and change my expenses.

There are people in history and characters in folklore that we today can best describe as trans. But we shouldn't forget that we can't know if they would agree and how people would have lived if that word had existed.

@betalars I think for me personally if I was born in a time when medical transition didn't exist I just wouldn't have lived a full life. I don't see my gender as something that's queer- I'm a bisexual who leans saphic, thats whats queer about me.

@julia I wonder how much of this is akin to not being able to imagine living without active noise cancelling headphones and how much of this is me being a different flavour of trans than you.
And i also wonder how i think about this in a few years when I hopefully came to a good conclusion with my gender.

But ... and i think that underlines the point @Lana made ... if "eunuch" was a common word used by the LGBTQ community today ... MAGA would bash it just as much as ace or trans or non-binary.

@Lana Replacing the Constitution with Bible-based law is part of Project 2025. It was also in the 2016 RNC platform. Funny though that this is from the same people setting their hair on fire over Sharia Law. Same thing, different religion.
@Lana I mean, if we’re citing the Bible, let’s write an essay!!!

@Lana

MAGA: Thou Shalt Not Do Paedophilia is not one of the Ten Commandments. This is why we need a government based on the Bible

@davidtheeviloverlord @Lana coming up with the Bible verse for that one would present some fun options.

@poleguy @Lana

Suffer the little children.

@Lana that's christianity, which is distinct from american christianity
@Lana only the parts of the bible they have custom misinterpretations for; like where god destroys a city for raping strangers, but they claim it's about god hating gays
@Lana
It does also not apply to Americans abroad. They need to be treated superior to native-borns.
@Lana ich musste lachen

@Lana Also Lev 23:22 "When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Leave them for the poor and for the foreigner residing among you. I am the LORD your God"

"Gleaning" meant people who were allowed to follow the harvesters and pick up whatever leavings they could. It was a form of bronze-age poor relief. The modern version is Social Security.

THE BIBLE SAYS THAT NON CITIZENS CAN CLAIM SOCIAL SECURITY!

@Lana The only part of Leviticus that matters is 20:13. The rest of it is decoration.
@Lana
They, #maga, like to quote the bible, but they don't like it when others quote the bible.
