@Soozcat @Lana I agree β they seem rather embarrassed by the Old Testament, even though if they believe in the Trinity all the horrible genocide, slavery, and sexual assault done by Yahweh is also done by Jesus.

And I certainly didnβt mean to suggest you thought those passages were models for morality. (No one should, of course, but as Iβve seen more and more hardcore βprofessionalβ religious apologists, Iβve been appalled at how many of them try to justify what seem like obvious atrocities.)
@michaelgemar @Soozcat @Lana I was raised/am Catholic too, but in my family we actually read the whole bible through. Throughout my life, my father would read it through and then start at the beginning again.
I also went to daily Mass for years. It's surprising how much of the bible is actually covered in the readings at daily+Sunday Mass over the two/three year cycle.

Many people of non-religious background 'joke' that anyone who reads the bible believes that every book in the bible is written as prescriptive biblical moral rules to apply literally to modern life. I don't know many religious people that actually think that way, excepting of course the "hardcore professional religious apologists" who seem more set on being divisive politicians than christian evangelists.
@poleguy @Soozcat @michaelgemar @Lana Most I heard was that some parts of the Bible are inappropriate for children. But not before getting a few books in.
Consequently, Leviticus had a rather interesting set of rules involving animal sacrifices, which didn't even get covered in a Catholic school. And then rules for (indentured) servants. It also felt like I wouldn't get any explanation in the school.

You may keep them as a possession for your children after you, for them to inherit as property. If I imagine myself growing up in biblical times, i could see myself become an eunuch in puberty while current me still hasn't really figured out what to do about my gender at age 30.
And i wouldn't have "trans" ... as a concept to understand and change my expenses.
There are people in history and characters in folklore that we today can best describe as trans. But we shouldn't forget that we can't know if they would agree and how people would have lived if that word had existed.
@julia I wonder how much of this is akin to not being able to imagine living without active noise cancelling headphones and how much of this is me being a different flavour of trans than you.
And i also wonder how i think about this in a few years when I hopefully came to a good conclusion with my gender.
But ... and i think that underlines the point @Lana made ... if "eunuch" was a common word used by the LGBTQ community today ... MAGA would bash it just as much as ace or trans or non-binary.

"Gleaning" meant people who were allowed to follow the harvesters and pick up whatever leavings they could. It was a form of bronze-age poor relief. The modern version is Social Security.
