MAGA: Cancelling student debt is immoral. This is why we need a government based on the Bible.

DEUTERONOMY 15:1: At the end of every seven years you must cancel all debts. This is how it is to be done: Every creditor shall cancel the loan he has made to his fellow Israelite. He shall not require payment from his fellow Israelite or brother, because the LORD's time for canceling debts has been proclaimed.

NUMBERS 5:16 :The priest shall bring her and have her stand before the Lord. Then he shall take some holy water in a clay jar and put some dust from the tabernacle floor into the water. Here the priest is to cause the woman to drink the bitter water and say —“May this bitter water enter your body so that either your abdomen swells or your womb miscarries.”

@Lana MAGA : We need to establish traditional Bible gender roles!

GALATIANS 3:28 : There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

@michaelgemar @Lana
What I've seen is that most Christians are perfectly willing to ignore the Old Testament unless we're talking about rules for women.

@Soozcat @Lana I agree — they seem rather embarrassed by the Old Testament, even though if they believe in the Trinity all the horrible genocide, slavery, and sexual assault done by Yahweh is also done by Jesus.

(That said, Galatians is in the New Testament.)

There’s a YouTube channel, Joel Reads Bible, where an atheist is reading the whole Bible verse by verse starting with Genesis. It’s pretty eye-opening how heinous much of it is:

I’m reading Bible so you don’t have to! 🙃 Are you tired of Christians and atheists cherry picking Bible to make it say whatever they want it to say? Are you tired of hearing "that's out of context"? Well, this is the channel for you! I'm reading Bible, every word, from the first page to the last page, in context! Is God going to reveal him/them/itself to me through the book or is it going to read like an incoherent myth? Only time will tell (11+ years if my calculations are correct)! Subscribe!

@michaelgemar @Lana There's nothing that kills belief in the Bible faster than reading the whole thing yourself.
@Soozcat @michaelgemar @Lana I read the whole thing years ago. I don't recall having had any surprises... the controversial bits are all very frequently discussed... And the rest is covered heavily in church... But there are a lot of boring parts...
@poleguy @Soozcat @Lana I was pretty shocked at how frequent and explicit the genocide is, how pro-slavery it is, and that if a priest’s daughter is sexually immoral he is supposed to burn her alive. (Also how much the Patriarchs are kinda jerks.) And I’m only in Joshua at this point.
@michaelgemar @Soozcat @Lana to be clear, I am not saying I think those types of passages are good examples of moral life. Only that I had already heard of them and wasn't surprised by the time I read them.

@poleguy @Soozcat @Lana I was raised Catholic, so the details of the Bible weren’t a priority when I grew up. 🙂

And I certainly didn’t mean to suggest you thought those passages were models for morality. (No one should, of course, but as I’ve seen more and more hardcore “professional” religious apologists, I’ve been appalled at how many of them try to justify what seem like obvious atrocities.)

@michaelgemar @Soozcat @Lana I was raised/am Catholic too, but in my family we actually read the whole bible through. Throughout my life, my father would read it through and then start at the beginning again.

I also went to daily Mass for years. It's surprising how much of the bible is actually covered in the readings at daily+Sunday Mass over the two/three year cycle.

It's a bit light on old testament, but lots of that stuff is boring history of kings and wars. :-)

Percentage of the Bible in the Lectionary

Sunday Masses use a three-year cycle of readings, whereas daily Masses use a two-year cycle. It has been reported by Fr. Felix Just, S.J., that the Sunday and w...

I don't know why I felt I should clarify that here. Ha!

Many people of non-religious background 'joke' that anyone who reads the bible believes that every book in the bible is written as prescriptive biblical moral rules to apply literally to modern life. I don't know many religious people that actually think that way, excepting of course the "hardcore professional religious apologists" who seem more set on being divisive politicians than christian evangelists.
